Unresolved Plotlines on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Fans Want Answered

The show is a popular sitcom with numerous episodes and tales, featuring five principal characters who are among the most despicable individuals. Given the multitude of narratives presented, it’s only natural that some questions or plot points might have been left unresolved, sparking curiosity among viewers.

If there are still unresolved main storylines or even minor characters fans are curious about, there’s a lot more ground for the creators of “It’s Always Sunny” to delve into should they decide to revisit those narratives in the future.

In this sitcom, It’s Always Sunny, there’s an amusing premise where each character has their own dedicated day. On Mac’s Day, for instance, he is the boss of everything the group does, and they can’t voice any complaints or else another day gets added to his schedule. This concept fits perfectly with the show. In season fourteen, we get a glimpse of Dee’s Day, and at the end of “Mac Day,” there’s a sneak peek into Frank’s Day. So, viewers are left wondering what the rest of the gang’s days entail.

As a movie reviewer, I found myself intrigued by an episode where Charlie’s day seemed to consist primarily of chasing small creatures in the sewer system. While this might not have been the most riveting plotline to delve into, it was Dennis’ day that truly left me on the edge of my seat. Known for his affinity towards manipulating others, the potential of what such a day could entail had the makings of pure, unadulterated comedy genius.

One of the characters from “It’s Always Sunny” is Abby, a young girl whom Dennis encounters at a water park during season twelve’s episode titled fittingly as, “The Gang Goes to a Water Park.” Dennis becomes aware of Abby after she tricks him, and in turn, he tricks her too. Yet, it’s not about revenge for Dennis; instead, an unusual friendship develops. This duo then proceeds to con their way around the water park, snatching whatever catches their fancy and stashing their ill-gotten gains in a locker.

Towards the end of the show, Abby bids farewell to Dennis. It’s quite upsetting for both the viewers and Dennis, having grown fond of her company. However, following her departure, it’s revealed that she had one final trick up her sleeve – stealing the locker key. Despite being a temporary character, there’s a strong desire among the audience for her return.

In the sitcom “It’s Always Sunny,” Dee’s car and Dee herself have been targets of jokes more often than any other subject. Interestingly, throughout the series, Dee’s car has undergone quite a bit of abuse. Multiple times, it’s been hit, crashed, dismantled, and even exploded when Mac and Charlie attempted to stage their own deaths. In the fifth season episode titled “The Gang Hits the Road,” Dee’s car was yet again stolen – this time by a hitchhiker in Philadelphia.

The group decided to give a ride to this hitchhiker on their journey solely for the purpose of socializing and sleeping together in the back seat. But as they slept through the night, they woke up parked outside Paddy’s Pub, noticing that Dee’s car was missing. The mystery of what happened to the hitchhiker remains unresolved, leaving us wondering where he or she might have gone. It would be fascinating to learn more about the hitchhiker’s fate.

In the season fourteen opener, titled “The Gang Gets Romantic,” an episode filled with humor and self-mockery, the gang embarks on a quest for love in different ways. Frank and Charlie decide to rent out their room to attract European women who might be interested in them romantically. However, they unexpectedly encounter Nikki and Alexi, two European men who bear striking resemblances to Frank and Charlie themselves.

Initially, Nikki and Alexi seem like mismatches, but eventually, it appears they could be a flawless duo for them. The pair rush to the bus station to intercept them before they depart. Recalling the popular Before Sunrise series, Alexi and Nikki suggest meeting again a year later at this very spot. Did Frank and Charlie manage to reconnect with Alexi and Nikki after that, or did they forget about their rendezvous?

The last episode of season three from “It’s Always Sunny” is titled “Mac Is a Serial Killer.” In this storyline, Mac exhibits odd behavior that leads the rest of the gang to suspect he might be the infamous serial killer lurking around Philadelphia. However, it’s eventually revealed that Mac is innocent, and surprisingly, Dennis isn’t even considered a possible suspect. Instead, the group uncovers the truth that Dee’s peculiar neighbor is actually the culprit all along. As they search his freezer, they discover several decapitated heads.

Towards the finale of the show, the murderer returned to his apartment only to find all the group members present. Frank started up a chainsaw, and the episode ended with the credits rolling. Even though this scene doesn’t significantly impact the storyline, it leaves one pondering about what transpired between the gang and the killer during that moment in the show. Was the murderer captured or did he manage to escape? Both outcomes seem plausible for the group.

In modern comedy series, there has been an amusing trend where they invent unique games that are integral to their plotlines, like True American on “New Girl” or the infamous Chardee MacDennis in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” The latter game is known as the “Ultimate Game of Games,” and it often leaves Paddy’s Pub in shambles. Given its high alcohol content, these games can create quite a heated competition!

According to the legend, Dennis and Dee have consistently outwitted Mac and Charlie in their games, even when Frank manipulated the rules during the second round on the show. While It’s Always Sunny generally doesn’t require revisiting past glories, it could be an exciting episode to witness Mac and Charlie finally emerge victorious against the smug and malicious Reynolds siblings.

In episodes titled “Mac & Charlie Die,” parts one and two, Dennis takes on a new roommate named Jan, played by Keir O’Donnell, who is an outgoing European man with a penchant for assisting Dennis in his endeavors to seduce numerous women. Upon his arrival, he creates an awkward situation between Dennis and Frank before being removed from the premises. Since then, Jane has not made any further appearances or been referenced on the show.

Reintroducing Jan to the group could make for an intriguing plot twist, considering most of the crew never interacted with him before. While he’s not crucial to the storyline, his return could add an interesting dynamic for potential upcoming episodes or seasons.

In the sixth-season Halloween episode of “It’s Always Sunny,” titled “Who Got Dee Pregnant?”, the group ponders the title question as they struggle to remember a enjoyable evening. Although this particular episode was a highlight of that season, the initial idea for the guys had been that they would burglarize a museum and spend the night, reminiscent of…

This idea seems ideal for an episode. Even though it covers most aspects thoroughly, the intriguing off-screen journey is something that could have been equally engaging if portrayed visually.

Throughout the series, Maureen Ponderosa, portrayed by Catherine Reitman, was a consistent character. She made her debut in the season six opener titled “Mac Fights Gay Marriage,” where she quickly divorced Dennis. This divorce led to Dennis being obligated to pay alimony, and from then on, the series took a humorous turn as Maureen pursued her dream of becoming a literal cat. This outlandish concept was fitting for the unconventional humor found in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

In the episode titled “Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer,” Maureen’s character suffers a violent death off-screen. The events suggest she may have fallen from a roof, potentially at the hands of Dennis, although the initial investigation classified it as an accident. However, in a later series installment, hints emerge that Dennis might have been involved, implying there could be more to Maureen’s demise than meets the eye. Was her death truly an accident, or was Dennis responsible for the crime?

One key question the series failed to address was initially presented in the captivating and intriguing episode titled “Being Frank.” In season eleven, viewers were given a glimpse into Danny DeVito’s character, Frank’s perspective, as he navigated his way triumphantly through a realm of crime and substance abuse. However, during this episode, Frank finds himself waking up in the hospital after being beaten up. As he flees, a doctor informs him that he has a severe illness with potentially fatal consequences.

In a recent scene, Frank hastily bypasses the doctor without giving heed to what had been said. So far, this incident hasn’t been revisited in the series. Is this a hint about Frank’s eventual storyline? Will viewers eventually find closure on this subplot, or was it merely a light-hearted moment with numerous amusing outcomes that shouldn’t be overanalyzed? Could there be more to unravel here?
