Unknown 9 Franchise Cancelled as Developer States the Series’ Universe Doesn’t ‘Warrant Any Further Exploration’

Bandai Namco’s extensive cross-media project, titled “Unknown 9,” has been terminated, due to the disappointing performance of its predecessor, “Unknown 9: Awakening,” falling short of both the publisher’s and developer Reflector Entertainment’s expectations.

As reported by Herve Hoerdt, who is both CEO of Reflector and Chief Content Officer for Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe, the studio has temporarily halted work on a future project that had reached its conceptualization stage. This project is strongly hinted to be another installment in the Unknown 9 series.

In the leading role as Haroona, portrayed by Anya Chalotra from the popular TV show “The Witcher”, the game titled “Unknown 9: Awakening” was released in October. This innovative project includes a series of novels, comic books, podcasts, and web series for additional content. Unfortunately, if it fails, as confirmed by Hoerdt through a statement on LinkedIn, it could result in more layoffs at Reflector.

He clarified that if we proceeded with this project, it wouldn’t have been viable for the studio’s long-term growth. Sadly, this choice leads to job cuts as a result. Moreover, he pointed out that this decision stems from the unsuccessful launch of the studio’s initial daring project – a new intellectual property featuring a comprehensive transmedia universe.

The recent job reductions are a continuation of significant workforce reductions that occurred in November, resulting in Reflector reducing 18% of its staff. Hoerdt announced that the studio will transition to a “single project approach” for the near future, with their upcoming game rumored to be based on an existing Bandai Namco intellectual property that is reportedly progressing favorably.
