Unknown 9: Awakening Developer Reflector Has Laid Off 18% Of its Workforce

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experiences under my belt, I’ve seen studios rise and fall like the tides. The recent news about Reflector Entertainment and their layoffs has left me with a heavy heart. I’ve been following the Unknown 9 series for quite some time now, appreciating the unique blend of gaming, podcasts, novels, and comic books they offer.

Reflector Entertainment, the game development company based in Montreal that’s known for creating ‘Unknown 9: Awakening‘, has undergone staff reductions affecting several teams such as storytelling, art design, promotion, and quality control.

As reported by a Game Developer, the studio known as Unknown 9 has let go of approximately 18% of its workforce. A statement released by the company confirmed that these job cuts are part of an initiative to realign their focus, as they embark on a fresh phase of development.

According to General Manager Marc-André Séguin, these modifications are essential so we can effectively accomplish our urgent goals and ensure that each team member has a significant role in our current initiatives.

In essence, Séguin explains that, over the course of our studio’s existence, we haven’t typically needed to make changes like the one we’re announcing today. This decision isn’t based on commercial gains or external influences, but rather on the current situation we find ourselves in. Regrettably, at this point in time, we can’t assure that there will be tangible work for all of our exceptionally skilled team members.

According to Séguin, this transition gives us the opportunity to carefully improve our procedures and finesse our future endeavors. This way, we can create experiences for players that are not only significant but also unforgettable.

Although change may not be simple, it offers us valuable opportunities for contemplation. Through our travels thus far, we’ve gained much knowledge about the hurdles associated with progression. Looking ahead, we are resolute in utilizing these insights to construct a more robust and targeted tomorrow.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been immersed in the captivating world of “Unknown 9: Awakening” for a month now, published by none other than Bandai Namco, who also happen to be its creators. This isn’t just a game; it’s a transmedia extravaganza that includes podcasts, novels, and comic books, all contributing to an expansive narrative universe. This week, the second season of the “Unknown 9: Out of Sight” podcast dropped, alongside the fourth issue of the riveting “Unknown 9: Torment” comic book series, and the latest instalment of the webseries, “Unknown 9: Passage”. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us next!

Regarding the game, it garnered a variety of opinions from critics, with some finding it disorganized. For a detailed analysis, you might want to check out our review of Unknown 9: Awakening.
