Universal Pictures RESPOND to claim Ariana Grande was paid more than Cynthia Erivo on Wicked

As a long-time theater enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of productions, I must say that the rumored salary discrepancy between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for Wicked has left me quite perplexed. Having followed both artists’ careers, it seems clear to me that Ariana would attract a larger audience due to her massive fanbase. However, it’s essential to consider the value Cynthia brings to the table as an immensely talented actress and vocalist.

Contrary to speculations suggesting a significant difference in salaries, it’s reported that both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo from Wicked were compensated equally.

Contrary to the buzzing speculations circulating online about my earnings compared to Ariana Grande’s, I’d like to clear the air. A representative has confirmed that the reported figures suggesting I received $1 million while she supposedly earned $15 million are not accurate. Let’s focus on the quality of our work rather than the size of our paychecks!

The rumored salaries of each Wicked cast member had gone viral on social media.

According to a statement from Universal, as shared by Variety, the claims of wage differences between Cynthia and Ariana have no basis in reality; they’re merely speculative material originating from online sources.

The statement added: ‘The women received equal pay for their work on ‘Wicked.’

However, it is still unclear exactly what salary they were both paid.

Fans were taken aback by the early report since Erivo, cast as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West), is set to take on a leading part, whereas Grande is set for a more secondary role as Glinda the Good Witch.

It’s been mentioned, without concrete evidence, that Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum, who portray Madame Morrible and the Wizard in the production, allegedly received a compensation of about $2 million apiece.

Regarding the other principal actors, it’s been rumored that Jonathan Bailey, recognized for his role as Prince Fiyero, is said to be making approximately four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

It’s said that he earns approximately $450,000, whereas Ethan Slater, known for playing Boq and who began dating Grande during the film project, allegedly receives $350,000.

Marissa Bode and Bowen Yang’s reported salaries are $250,000 each, per the rumored list.

Upon hearing about the alleged leaked list, I’ve noticed that fellow fans have been openly expressing their opinions, and it seems there’s a widespread agreement regarding the rumored information.

One particular tweet on X has garnered over 11 million views and has received nearly 120,000 likes.

The tweet read: ‘Ariana getting paid over $10M more than Cynthia doesn’t sit right with me…’

‘It’s not making sense,’ another commentator wrote.

Yet another person called the rumored salary gap ‘diabolical.’ Someone else deemed it ‘unfair.’

On the contrary, some argued that the supposed disparity was justified since Ariana was undeniably more recognized as a celebrity. They reasoned that actors’ salaries are not determined by their talent alone, but also by the audience attracted to the movie due to their fame.

As for addressing these rumors, I’d like to clarify that it’s been suggested that Ariana reportedly divided her $15 million earnings with Cynthia, allowing Cynthia to receive a larger sum than her initial $2 million payment.

As a connoisseur of the arts, let me share an intriguing tidbit about the esteemed filmmaker, Jon M. Chu. He’s known for showering his talented cast members with well-deserved rewards when their films are successful. So, if the magic of ‘Wicked’ truly enchants audiences worldwide, both the actors and actresses involved might just find a little extra gold dusting their way!

Simultaneously, many Wicked enthusiasts expressed the belief that Grande was likely to garner more earnings than Erivo due to her substantial fan base, which they believed would attract a larger audience.

A different Twitter user expressed, ‘You all consistently leave me speechless when we talk about this subject.’ They seem puzzled, asking, ‘What justifies giving them the same consideration? After all, they don’t contribute the same number of attendees to the theater…’

It’s been disclosed that the estimated salaries were released following the news that Wicked made approximately $114 million at the U.S. box office during its initial weekend, breaking the record for the highest opening weekend earnings for any musical adaptation ever.

Regarding the budget, it’s reported by Variety that the total cost for producing both parts of “Wicked” was approximately $300 million. This breaks down to an average budget of around $150 million per part.
