Universal Music partners with Nvidia to create ‘responsible AI’ for music

Universal Music Group is teaming up with Nvidia to develop what they’re calling “responsible AI,” which could significantly impact how people find and create music.

The companies announced Tuesday they’re starting research into how AI can help musicians create and get fairly compensated for their work. They plan to use AI tools to assist artists, rather than simply letting AI generate music on its own, with a focus on protecting artists’ rights.

Universal Music Group CEO Sir Lucian Grainge stated in a press release that they are excited to partner with NVIDIA to harness the power of AI for artists and fans. They aim to drive innovation in the music industry while ensuring the protection of copyright and artistic expression.

Universal Music Group is partnering with Nvidia and will utilize its Music Flamingo AI. This advanced program, released last November, deeply understands music – analyzing everything from its structure and harmonies to the instruments used and the lyrics. Music Flamingo can work with songs up to 15 minutes long and even recognizes the historical background, cultural significance, and emotional journey within the music.

Universal Music India is buying a 30% stake in Excel, a Bollywood production company, to expand its reach in the rapidly growing South Asian music market.

As a huge music fan, I’m really excited about what Universal Music Group is doing with this new technology. Basically, they’ve built a tool that really listens to songs, and they’re hoping it’ll help people discover artists they might not have found otherwise. Instead of just sorting music by genre, which can be limiting, this ‘Music Flamingo’ thing automatically connects you with new music based on what it actually sounds like – it’s a much more intuitive way to find your next favorite song, in my opinion.

Nvidia and Universal Music Group are planning to create a program where musicians and producers can test and help improve new AI tools. The goal is to make these tools more user-friendly and seamlessly integrated into the creative process.

Founded in 1996 and with offices in the Netherlands and Santa Monica, Universal Music Group is a major force in the music industry, representing artists such as Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish. Currently valued at around $40 billion, its stock trades for approximately $25.35 per share. This partnership with Nvidia builds on Universal’s existing AI collaborations with companies including Klay and Stability AI.

Founded in 1993, Nvidia initially focused on creating 3D graphics for games and multimedia. Over time, as technology advanced, the company became a leading innovator in the computer chips that drive artificial intelligence tools and applications.

Nvidia’s Richard Kerris announced that by combining their Music Flamingo technology with Universal Music Group’s extensive music library and creative resources, they aim to revolutionize how people around the world find, experience, and connect with music.

I’m really encouraged by how they’re approaching this. It sounds like they’re committed to doing things the right way – prioritizing artists by protecting their work, giving proper credit where it’s due, and, crucially, respecting copyright. It’s a responsible approach that gives me confidence.
