“Unique” Game of Thrones prequel The Mad King announced – here’s how to watch

Fans of Game of Thrones are in for a new experience with the upcoming stage play, Game of Thrones: The Mad King. This marks the first time the world of Westeros will be brought to life on stage, thanks to a partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Author George R.R. Martin has given the play his blessing, and it’s set to debut in the UK later this year.

Duncan Macmillan adapted the play, and Dominic Cooke is directing it. It will premiere this summer at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. Interested audiences can sign up for updates now, with further details coming in April.

Priority booking begins on April 14th. Tickets will then be available to the general public shortly after, with the exact date to be announced soon.

What to Read Next

The story is set several years before the events in the Game of Thrones TV series and the A Song of Ice and Fire books. It begins as winter ends and spring arrives at Harrenhal. A grand feast is held the night before a jousting tournament, where people fall in love and guess who will compete.

However, hidden from view, people within the King’s own court are secretly plotting against him, disturbed by his cruel and violent rule. Meanwhile, the sounds of war are growing closer.

The story explores how strong family ties, old predictions, and the rightful claim to the throne are all threatened by a fierce struggle for control. It leaves you wondering who will make it through and who will ultimately succeed.

In a recent statement, Martin explained that when he initially created Game of Thrones, he only envisioned it as a book – a space where his imagination could run free.

He went on to say that he was thrilled when his work was turned into a TV series, allowing audiences to experience the world he’d created.

Martin expressed his surprise and delight that his work was being adapted for the stage. He said he hadn’t anticipated it, but was thrilled, and believes theatre offers a special experience where performers and audiences can connect and create something truly magical.

I immediately thought of the RSC when considering adapting Game of Thrones for the stage. Shakespeare is the most important writer in English, and his work has always inspired me. Plus, he dealt with the same problems – like staging battles – so we felt like we were following in great footsteps.

Seeing this new play come to life on stage is going to be fantastic. The script by Duncan beautifully captures the spirit of the original story, and I can’t wait for both longtime fans and new audiences to enjoy it in a live theatrical setting.

Ticket pricing details are yet to be announced, as are exact performance dates.

I’ve been checking out the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms TV show, which is a spin-off, and it’s in its first season right now. Good news for fans – they’re already planning a second season, and it should be out in 2027!

You can find all eight seasons of Game of Thrones on DVD and Blu-ray. The prequel series, House of the Dragon, is available on HBO and Max in the United States, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the United Kingdom.
