Unearthed Tina Turner Track Debuts, But Critics Say It’s Not ‘The Best’
After spending four decades hidden away, a previously unheard Tina Turner song has been discovered from the archives – however, some critics argue that it doesn’t quite measure up to her iconic masterpiece “The Best.
Originally, the song “Hot For You, Baby” was meant to be part of Tina Turner’s 1984 album titled “Private Dancer,” but it was ultimately not included in that release.
Instead of being released after it was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, the song was put aside, giving way to her popular hits like “What’s Love Got To Do With It” and “Better Be Good To Me.
Yesterday [Thurs], the long-awaited release of the single was premiered on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Mark Goodier, which happened exactly two years following the singer’s demise at the age of 83.
Critics have described the late Ms. Turner’s song as ‘unoriginal’ and explained that they can comprehend why it wasn’t included in the final selection for the album.
One reviewer Alexis Petridis wrote: ‘It isn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, a lost classic’.
The rock track discovered from the earth was created by John Grant, the music industry executive who orchestrated her resurgence during her career’s midpoint.
Composed by the Australian duo George Young and Harry Vanda, this tune was previously recorded by Scottish-Australian singer John Paul Young, who is famously known for his disco hit “Love Is In The Air.
Fan reaction to the newly discovered single has also been mixed.
Some people praised the Tina Turner, saying she ‘assisted me in enduring’, but others were not as positive about her impact.
Disappointed fans said their day was ‘ruined’ by hearing it on BBC Radio 2.
One supporter commented: ‘Much of what she’s put out has been fairly ordinary, so whatever she chose not to release likely wouldn’t be any better. And after hearing the song, it seems my prediction held true.’
Another added: ‘Yet another Operation Oops’.
A previously unreleased track is set to feature in the 40th-anniversary release of “Private Dancer,” scheduled for launch on March 21st.
This special edition will feature a collection of unreleased tracks and live performances.
Releasing “Private Dancer” in May 1984 was a significant milestone for Tina Turner, rekindling her fame and popularity.
Previously known Strictly Come Dancing judge, Dame Arlene Phillips, reminisced about an exhausting 19-hour production day, serving as the choreographer for Tina Turner’s hit music video, “Private Dancer.
In 2023, at the age of 81, Dame Arlene expressed: ‘It brought us all together, and Tina was exceptional. She poured all of herself into it – her emotions and spirit. It was a part she embraced, and she wasn’t shy about showing her tears.’
Ms Turner died from natural causes at her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, in 2023.
Throughout her artistic career, she amassed a total of twelve Grammy Awards, making her the pioneer who achieved a top 40 hit in each of seven successive decades.
Not long after her passing, Rolling Stone placed her at number 55 on their compilation of the 200 Most Exceptional Singers Throughout History.
