Underrated Fantasy Series with 94% RT Score Soars on Netflix 7 Years After Debut

In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Harry Potter and Twilight sparked a surge in interest for fantasy books among readers. As a result, numerous other series were adapted, with The Mortal Instruments being one of them.

The AMC series that started in 2018 was adapted from Deborah Harkness’ “All Souls” trilogy, the first installment of which, “A Discovery of Witches,” came out in 2011. This book series also included “Shadow of the Night,” published in 2012, and “The Book of Life,” released in 2014. Although it had received excellent reviews initially, it’s now experiencing a fresh momentum on Netflix, as reported.

The supernatural drama A Discovery of Witches recently made its global debut on Netflix and has garnered significant interest. To begin with, in the Top 10 rankings worldwide, Season 1 ranked fifth, amassing 3.4 million views, and being watched for a total of 19.7 million hours. Remarkably, this series, which received minimal promotion on Netflix, has now become a success story.

Starting from September, the show initially garnered interest within certain circles, but it has since caught global attention. Notably, its first season ranked among the top 10 in a total of 37 countries, spanning across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Moreover, it claimed the position of No. 1 title in New Caledonia.

Incorporating elements of fantasy and the supernatural alongside a romantic plotline, “A Discovery of Witches” chronicles the journey of Diana Bishop, a professor specializing in the history of science at Yale University. As she stumbles upon an ancient manuscript previously believed to be lost, she unwittingly sets events into motion that lead her to acknowledge her magical lineage and enter into a clandestine relationship with a captivating vampire.

A Discovery of Witches Had a Positive Reception

The TV show based on the trilogy aired over three seasons from 2018 to 2022 on Sky One in Britain (later Sky Max), and on AMC in the U.S. The series featured Matthew Goode and James Norton as characters named Matthew Clairmont. In addition, Edward Bluemel, Louise Brealey, Malin Buska, Aiysha Hart, Owen Teale, Alex Kingston, and Valarie Pettiford were also part of the cast in “A Discovery of Witches.

The TV series “A Discovery of Witches” was widely acclaimed, with Season 1 earning a remarkable 94% approval rating from critics, who awarded it the “Certified Fresh” badge, and an 83% positive response from viewers. Although subsequent seasons didn’t achieve the same ratings, they were equally lauded, receiving an 83% rating from critics and 80% from audiences for Season 2, and an 86% rating from critics and 74% from audiences for its third and final season.

A Discovery of Witches is streaming on Netflix.
