Underrated Baseball Movie ‘Hardball’ Features Young Michael B. Jordan

With baseball season just around the corner for 2026, I’ve been thinking about great baseball movies. Of course, everyone knows classics like A League of Their Own, Bull Durham, and Moneyball, but I also love digging up some lesser-known titles. Films like Eephus, Mr. 3000, and Trouble with the Curve are seriously underrated and totally worth checking out!

The baseball movie Hardball is a bit of a hidden gem, and it’s interesting to note that it stars two actors who are now household names: Keanu Reeves and Michael B. Jordan. Reeves plays the coach, and Jordan appears as one of the players. Considering Jordan’s recent Oscar nomination, it’s neat to revisit one of his earlier film roles.

Hardball Is An Underrated Baseball Movie

Despite being largely overlooked, Hardball is a surprisingly good baseball movie. It tells the story of Conor O’Neill (Keanu Reeves), a man down on his luck who takes on the challenge of coaching a little league team as a way to earn money and pay off a gambling debt.

This movie follows a baseball team made up of young players from the ABLA housing projects in Chicago. Their diverse backgrounds are central to the story. Despite their differences, the team forms a strong bond with their coach and begins to achieve success, creating a feel-good narrative.

Critics weren’t very impressed with Hardball, giving it a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is below average for films in this genre. However, viewers seemed to enjoy it much more, with a 70% audience score suggesting it’s a fun watch.

Michael B. Jordan Plays A Tragic Character In Hardball

In the movie Hardball, Michael B. Jordan plays Jamal, a talented player who quickly becomes friends with his teammates. However, a rival coach discovers Jamal is a little older than he claimed, making him ineligible to play. The moment he finds out and has to leave the team is particularly emotional and sad.

We get a strong first impression of Jordan’s talent, as he delivers a compelling performance. His character’s story takes a sad turn when we see him later, now involved with a gang and making poor choices. Sadly, the film doesn’t offer a hopeful resolution where he reconnects with his friends.

The last we hear about Jamal, he’s still involved with the gang. It’s a tragic turn for someone who once showed so much promise, going from a fun-loving kid playing baseball to someone facing serious trouble. He’s one of the most heartbreaking characters in Hardball.
