As someone who’s seen a lot of red carpets, let me tell you, even icons aren’t immune to the effects of time! Cher is legendary for her youthful energy – she practically invented looking ageless – but even she showed a little of the years at the Grammys this weekend. It was a gentle reminder that we all evolve, and that’s perfectly okay.
Despite having a flawless appearance, she seemed completely lost and confused while presenting, making numerous mistakes. Her blunders were actually more amusing than the jokes told by the show’s host, Trevor Noah.
Wearing her signature leather and lace, the singer known for ‘Believe’ returned to the Grammys after 18 years to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award in Los Angeles.
Enjoying the attention as Cher, she momentarily forgot she also had to present the Record of the Year award, which went to Kendrick Lamar and SZA for their song ‘Luther’.
She casually walked off stage, saying ‘Thank you. I think that’s my cue to leave.’ Noah had to call her back.
Oh, honey, you know those moments when everything just… stops? That’s what happened. A really uncomfortable silence filled the room, everyone staring at the teleprompter, totally lost. And then, the announcer said the winner was… Luther Vandross. Bless his heart, but he’s been gone for years! It was one of those ‘did that really just happen?’ moments, honestly.
‘Luther… Luther Grandross [sic] – no, Kendrick Lamar!’ she rambled to baffled laughter.
If ever someone needed a pair of readers….
However, just like comfortable pants and discounts for older adults, they don’t quite fit the lifestyle of someone who always wants to feel rebellious and rock and roll.
The core issue is this: older actresses often try to maintain a youthful appearance, but the natural effects of aging make that incredibly difficult, creating a disconnect between image and reality.
During a Monday interview with Entertainment Tonight, SZA suggested that Cher likely knew Luther, offering this as a defense of Cher’s connection to him.
Perhaps, she knew George Washington too?
‘A legend was speaking. That’s what I understood. Cher was queening,’ said SZA.
This was a graceful reaction to a difficult situation that overshadowed the singer. It’s especially noteworthy because the show’s producer, Ben Winston, confirmed Cher was well-prepared for her performance.
Winston told Rolling Stone on Monday that they had definitely briefed her, and the instructions she needed were right there in the teleprompter.
SZA likely made the right decision by being respectful and diplomatic towards a legendary artist who has earned it with five decades of successful music and an Academy Award.
But ‘queening’?
I can’t completely agree.
Okay, look, I’ve been a Cher fan forever, and it pains me to say this, but… it’s true. Like a lot of actresses her age, she’s… different now. It’s not about getting older, honestly. It’s about the things she’s done – the choices she’s made. She’s not the icon she once was, and it’s heartbreaking. She’s become… a shadow of her former glory, almost like a sad imitation. It just… it really gets to me.
Her final major film role felt strangely empty – a brief, expressionless appearance in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. While her older co-stars, Pierce Brosnan and Andy Garcia, comfortably embraced the signs of aging and seemed to be enjoying themselves, Cher felt like a detached image – a distorted reflection of an aging star’s vanity, or a harsh example of the different expectations for women in Hollywood as they get older?
She’s not the only one behaving this way. Madonna herself has had so much cosmetic surgery that her face appears distorted, and her behavior often feels like a desperate attempt to stay young. She’s constantly surrounded by much younger dancers and is frequently seen with new, youthful stars, all of which makes her efforts to connect with a younger generation seem particularly forced.
It’s sad to see the once-innovative Queen of Pop decline in relevance, and it feels like her career hasn’t been managed well in recent years.
And what about Heidi Klum’s appearance at the Grammys, where she seemed to be making a deliberate effort to look youthful with a much younger companion?
Okay, seriously, can we TALK about her look?! She’s 52, a mom of four, and she completely stole the show – honestly, only Cher could compete with the buzz she created. She wore this incredible, custom leather dress – it was practically nude! – and it was SO daring, even Bianca Censori would have thought twice about wearing something so bold. I’m still obsessed!
Designer Marina Hoermanseder created the dress using a 3D mold of the model’s body, but the result looked more like a poorly made sausage casing. The model’s forced smile seemed just as strained.
I believe Donald Trump sparked this trend with his disrespectful 2015 comment to the New York Times, where he said Heidi Klum, then 42, was ‘no longer a ten.’ While that comment deserved criticism, did it also contribute to the ongoing need many people feel to prove they still have what it takes as they get older?
The evidence paints a disturbing picture. From suggestive underwear campaigns featuring her daughter, to overly sexualized beach photos and staged displays of affection with her much younger boyfriend – all frequently documented and shared on Instagram, it’s clear this behavior is intentional and exploitative.
Okay, look, everyone thinks Heidi Klum is all about body positivity because she talks about nudist beaches, but honestly? It feels… different. Like, it’s not about actually being comfortable in her own skin, it’s like she needs the attention. It’s like she’s constantly worried she’s not enough unless she’s doing something shocking or showing more skin. I’m a huge fan, truly, but it just feels… desperate, you know? It’s like she’s lost touch with genuine confidence and relies on these stunts to feel relevant.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always said women face a lot more pressure when it comes to aging – it’s a tough double standard. But there’s a sweet spot between embracing natural changes and, well, trying too hard to hold onto youth. It’s easy to lose sight of what’s realistic; you look at someone like Cher, and honestly, her skin now looks smoother than it did when she first hit the music scene with Sonny Bono decades ago! It just shows how much things have changed, and how easy it is to get carried away with procedures.
It’s disheartening to see even accomplished and powerful women feel pressured to change their appearance, downplay their talents, or compromise their worth in an attempt to look younger.
Ageing should involve a little evolution, not a regression fixed firmly under the male gaze.
