Unauthorized request

Although the exact release date of “The Authority” in the upcoming DC films schedule is yet to be determined as it’s currently on hold, we’re just about a month away from encountering one of the team’s members. Actress María Gabriela de Faría will portray Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, in James Gunn’s “Superman”. She will work for Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in this film. If de Faria gets her way, however, the relationship between Angela and Luthor might develop into something much deeper, and I’m eagerly waiting for this to happen within the DC Universe.

María Gabriela de Faría appeared on the recent episode of the DC Studios Showcase podcast, where she talked about her character The Engineer in the 2025 film. During the conversation, she delved into Angela’s relationship with Lex Luthor, explaining that despite being a fundamentally good person who is deeply wounded, she finds it within herself to assist him in his endeavor to eradicate malevolent extraterrestrial beings such as Superman. Here’s what she shared:

However, I also speculate that they share a hidden bond, which I frequently hinted to James [Gunn], saying something along the lines of “I feel like they’re involved intimately!” Lex seems so serious, yet he treats his beautiful girlfriend poorly. So, my theory is that after hours, The Engineer may be harsh with Lex, and this rough treatment could be a form of mutual affection.

‘James Gunn has now completed his work on Superman, wrapping up the project.’ – Kevin Smith commends Gunn’s intelligent approach to reimagining the Man of Steel.

David Corenswet found himself in a thoughtful and apprehensive state when James Gunn phoned to propose the role of Superman. I’m still amazed by the words he actually shared with the director.

The character Sara Sampaio portrays in the story is Eve Teschmacher, who was previously acted by Valerie Perrine in the initial two Superman films with Christopher Reeve and Andrea Brooks in the Supergirl TV series. Based on the glimpses we’ve caught of Sampaio’s Eve in trailers and promotional materials, she appears to be heavily focused on her appearance and taking selfies, and it wouldn’t shock me if she has an additional gig as an influencer while working for Lex Luthor as his assistant. Naturally, this doesn’t justify him mistreating her.

Interestingly enough, I find myself agreeing with María Gabriela de Faría’s perspective on the possibility of Angela Spica and Lex Luthor being romantically involved in some capacity. Granted, such a dynamic might seem odd, but it could undeniably add an intriguing layer to their characters. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that this will be explored in Superman, but if Engineer and Luthor share the screen again in another project, I hope James Gunn, as co-president of DC Studios, decides to incorporate this potential romantic tension into the DC Universe’s canon.

As a fervent enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement for the upcoming cinematic spectacle that is “Superman,” set to grace our screens on July 11. The Engineer, a character shrouded in mystery, will unveil her extraordinary nanotech prowess in this film, making her an intimidating adversary not only for David Corenswet’s Man of Steel but also for Krypto the Superdog and the robots within the Fortress of Solitude. The stunning enhancements we glimpse in the latest “Superman” trailer promise a visually captivating challenge for our beloved characters.
