Umbrella Academy star thought Five and Lila’s season 4 romance was a joke
As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of unexpected plot twists and romantic subplots, I must admit that Five and Lila’s romance in The Umbrella Academy took me by surprise! Just like Aidan Gallagher, I too thought it was a jest when the news first dropped. But alas, upon watching the series unfold, I realized they weren’t kidding after all.
In a private conversation with Digital Spy, Ritu Arya, who plays Lila in The Umbrella Academy, shared that at first, she considered Five (Aidan Gallagher) and her character’s romantic connection as a jest.
Arya mentioned that during the recent premiere, a writer seemed to unintentionally reveal to her that an event involving Lila and Five was going to occur, she shared.
Initially, their remark appeared too absurd for me to take seriously, so I didn’t give it much thought afterwards. However, upon reading the script, I realized that they were indeed serious – what a shock that was! It was truly mind-blowing.
Although Five and Lila’s bond came as quite a shock, Arya articulated her thoughts on how this narrative twist might have been strategically planned in advance.
Reflecting on past seasons, it gradually became clear to me that things were likely leading here, even though I hadn’t anticipated it earlier. It seems to me now that they had foreseen this all along.
As a gamer, I was utterly taken aback by the intense interaction, the relentless struggle, and the undeniable chemistry between us. It felt like we were two brilliant minds, each respecting the other’s intelligence and forming an unspoken connection. Despite expecting nothing of the sort, this turn of events was a massive surprise for me.
As I navigated through the gripping narrative of season four, I witnessed my character Gallagher evolve significantly, and that evolution was deeply rooted in the blossoming romance I shared with another character – a transformation that truly enriched Five.
He finds meaning in it whenever it appears. In my opinion, Five without turmoil seems lost and unsure about the essence of living, as his understanding of life is pieced together from various experiences but lacks a unifying context, a specific location, and significant companions.
“Gallagher stated that he struggles to connect with things, as he seems to be aimlessly wandering until he gets disoriented in the subway system.”
When queried about delving into a softer aspect of his persona, Gallagher replied: “It felt quite rewarding to witness my character arrive at that point.”
The Umbrella Academy seasons 1-4 are available to stream now on Netflix.
