Umbrella Academy star David Castañeda (Diego) thinks the final season backlash is "good"

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of binge-watching experiences under my belt, I must confess that The Umbrella Academy has been a rollercoaster ride, to say the least. The fourth and final season had its fair share of twists and turns that left many fans, myself included, scratching our heads in confusion.

Last week saw the arrival of the fourth and concluding season of “The Umbrella Academy” on Netflix, and while most of us found it enjoyable, numerous viewers encountered problems with it. (Proceed with caution, as potential SPOILERS follow.)

As a passionate gamer diving into the world of “Umbrella Academy,” one aspect that left many fans disheartened was the decline in the relationship between Diego and Lila. From season to season, their marriage seemed to lose its spark and passion, culminating in an unexpected affair between Lila and Number 5 (Diego’s brother) during the storyline. Even the actor portraying Diego, David Castañeda, admitted to feeling frustrated when he first read the scripts. In his own words, “I was pissed off,” he said recently. “I was angry. I had conversations with [showrunner] Steve [Blackman], asking, ‘Is this really necessary?'”

Reflecting on some time that’s passed, the harsh feedback from online critics towards the show has given me a fresh viewpoint. Recently, during an interview on the I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario podcast, I defended the season’s daring decisions. “I truly appreciate their risk-taking spirit,” I stated. “I adore how they challenge expectations, like when they turned Five and Diego against each other, sparking anger among viewers. When I witnessed this, I thought, ‘Wow, people are really upset about this.’ I believe that’s positive. It’s good to evoke some sort of response, so things can be flipped upside down.”

Essentially, he’s pleased the series sparked conversations among viewers. He inquired, “Why do these questions irritate you?” He also wanted to know, “Which aspects of these characters provided a sense of comfort for you? Moreover, what do you think these characters reveal about human nature?”

The Umbrella Academy stars share their reactions to the ending

The other big thing that ticked off Umbrella Academy fans was the ending, when the superpowered Hargreeves siblings learned that their very existence was the reason why they kept getting caught up in so many apocalypses, and sacrificed themselves so the universe could rest without them in it. The ending hints that they may exist yet in some form, but it was a little bleaker than fans were expecting.

It seems as though Castañeda was taken aback when he initially encountered this unexpected plot development in the scripts. “When I received these pages,” he stated, “I was secretly hoping they were placeholders.” However, with the passage of time, wisdom grows. “I’m extremely proud of how everything unfolded in the end,” he continued. “I’m genuinely pleased with the work we collectively accomplished during season four.”

I am happy [with] how it ended, and I’m happy because the experience of shooting the whole season and the whole series. It was the funnest season to shoot. … There was a lot of effort and a lot of love and a lot of creative output that came through.

Addressing the Decider, Elliot Page (Viktor Hargreeves) expressed that he found the conclusion predictable. “Initially, when I read it, I must admit I was taken aback,” Page admitted. “But upon reflection, the ending seemed plausible to me.”

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that you can now binge-watch all four seasons of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix! Make your own judgment about this captivating series.
