Uma Thurman opens up about ‘beautiful’ motherhood and the ‘mind-boggling’ difference between how she parents compared to her own upbringing

Uma Thurman has shared insights on the joy she finds in being a mom and drew comparisons between her parenting style and her own childhood experiences.

55-year-old Uma Thurman, best known for her role in Kill Bill, has two children with actor Ethan Hawke – Maya (age 26) and Levon (age 23). Additionally, she shares a 13-year-old daughter named Luna with financier Arpad Busson.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Uma shared insights on how her life has evolved significantly, especially compared to her earlier years in Hollywood, following her transition into motherhood.

As I gaze upon its beauty, I can’t help but feel a pang of longing, knowing the sun is setting on the days filled with my children’s laughter. I find myself eagerly anticipating that next chapter in life, which I affectionately refer to as the ‘Sunset Phase’.

Uma is brainstorming ideas for how she’ll utilize her free time, which isn’t taken up by shopping, driving, communicating with teachers, or other daily activities.

Elsewhere, Uma mentioned that she frequently contrasts her parenting style with the remarkable liberties she experienced during her teenage years.

As a teenager, Uma often ventured alone into the city for auditions, carrying only a quarter as a precaution in case she might get lost.

She said: ‘Mind-boggling, I mean, it’s unimaginable, those were different times.’ 

Following the occasion, Uma was accompanied by her seldom-seen daughter Luna during the premiere of Eurydice at the Signature Theatre in New York City in May.

The actress and her youngest child attended an event to cheer on their eldest daughter Maya before her Off-Broadway premiere. Maya played the main role in Sarah Ruhl’s reinterpretation of the ancient Greek tale, which concluded on June 22.

As the leading light on the crimson carpet, I exuded an air of casual elegance, draped in a stylish woolen overcoat and matching tailored pants that perfectly complemented my look.

Smiling for photos beside her mum, Luna opted for a black top and a pair of straight leg jeans. 

Maya was a sight to behold, wearing a beautiful, rust-colored midi dress that flowed elegantly, accessorized with an umbrella and heels in the same shade of red as her dress.

As a devoted parent, I am proud to share that my older offspring, Maya and Levon, who hail from my past relationship with Ethan Hawke, have made a name for themselves in the world of acting, just like their renowned parents before them.

Instead, Luna, her youngest daughter she shares with ex-partner Arpad Busson (aged 62, a French hedge fund manager), lives in a more secluded life that her mother has deliberately created for her.

An unusual occurrence took place during the 2023 premier of Wes Anderson’s widely praised comedy, Asteroid City, held in New York City – a production where Maya played a minor character.

Despite it being uncommon for Luna to attend such gatherings, on this occasion, she was captured on camera striking poses for the photographers.

Although there isn’t much information available on Luna, Uma has shared the reasons behind bestowing her daughter with four middle names.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Maya explained her clever reason: since it seemed unlikely that I could have more kids, I filled Luna (my dog) with names I liked instead.

‘We couldn’t quite agree on the name, so we call her Luna. She’s lucky that way.’ 

Uma and her former financial partner Arpad Busson started an up-and-down romance around 2007. They announced their engagement in July of the next year, but ended their engagement by 2009.

Despite the brief separation, Uma and Arpad reconciled in 2010, resuming their engagement once more.

By the year 2012, Luna had already made an appearance, yet her parents weren’t wedded by 2014. In that same year, they broke off their engagement for the second time, which appeared to mark the end of their relationship permanently.

Early in 2017, Uma and Arpad found themselves locked in a dispute over the custody of their youngest child, Luna. In the end, it was decided that Uma would be granted primary physical custody.

Before her relationship with Arpad, Uma Thurman was married twice: firstly, she was wedded to Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman from 1990 to 1992, and subsequently tied the knot with Ethan Hawke in 1998 following their encounter on the set of the 1997 sci-fi movie Gattaca. The marriage lasted till 2005.

They welcomed Maya in 1998 and Levon in 2002, before separating in 2003. 

Before his romance with Uma, Arpad was most famously linked with Elle Macpherson. They were a couple from 1996 to 2005 and have two sons together.
