Ulrika Jonsson marks one year of sobriety by sharing ‘drunk’ before and after photos as she admits ‘the journey goes on’

Ulrika Jonsson is celebrating a full year without alcohol, expressing her emotions through a heartfelt Instagram post on Thursday.

The television host, aged 57, posted a pair of images labeled “sober” and “drunk”, accompanied by the message “the journey continues,” for her over 200k followers to see.

Today marks a year without alcohol for me, Ulrika posted. No celebrations, no awards, just the continuous path forward.

I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been so kind, understanding, and compassionate towards me. They have picked me up when I needed it, treating me gently without any criticism. They guided me towards the right path, brought laughter into my life, and helped me overcome the burden of embarrassment.

She expressed gratitude towards her four children, Cameron (30), Bo (25), Martha (20), and Malcolm (16), and offered an apology for any worry she may have caused them: ‘Thank you to my kids for their unwavering support; for continuing to believe in me despite the anxiety I’ve likely given them.’

I would like to express my gratitude to my dear companions for their understanding and faith. Maintaining my sobriety remains my utmost concern. It seems that even old dogs can learn new tricks after all.

Apart from the “before” and “after” images, Ulrika also posted a photo from her childhood and a heartfelt note about “this time last year”.

Friends quickly flooded the comment section to offer their congratulations, with Kerry Katona expressing: “I’m so incredibly proud of you, my dear one, and I adore you beyond measure.

In June, Ulrika openly shared that she stopped consuming alcohol permanently. She sought assistance following her previous admission of frequently losing consciousness after excessive solo drinking sessions.

In October, she revealed her choice to abstain from alcohol and shared her realization that her alcohol consumption was detrimental to her wellbeing.

As a lifestyle guide, I once found myself relying on alcohol to help me cherish the past moments, and frequently, after indulging in heavy drinking sessions alone, I would lose consciousness, unable to recall those hours later.

In December, Ulrika celebrated reaching the six-month mark without alcohol, acknowledging that her loved ones played a significant role in helping her achieve this milestone.

In her recent post, the ex-Gladiator star posted both a current photo of herself and an old one where she was under the influence of alcohol. She confessed that she had once found it difficult to even glance at this older image.

In her account, Ulrika wrote about her journey to sobriety: “Today marks my sixth month without alcohol. On June 5th, 2024, I received the precious gift of desperation that led me to seek help. I no longer resembled my former self and I finally surrendered.

Regarding the photo depicting her apparent intoxication, Ulrika commented: ‘Pic. 2: shows me amidst the chaos. Yet another instance of being under the spell of alcohol. Initially, I found it difficult to revisit images of myself while under the influence of alcohol, as the weight of shame was unbearable.’

Reflecting on those photos now, my heart aches with compassion for the young woman – she was yearning for support, comfort, and guidance, not criticism or judgment. At that time, she seemed utterly lost and unaware of alternative paths.

Wrapping up her message, she added: “There are many more thoughts to express – I’ll share them when the time is right. My life has undergone a remarkable transformation in a most wonderful manner. This change feels deeply spiritual. Taking things one step at a time…
