Uglies writer explains big Peris change
As a seasoned gamer and bookworm with over two decades of story immersion under my belt, I must say that the adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s “Uglies” on Netflix has been an intriguing rollercoaster ride. Having read the books years ago, it was fascinating to see how the silver screen would interpret such a captivating narrative.
According to author Scott Westerfeld, there’s a significant modification made in the movie version of his Uglies book series that he feels is noteworthy.
Currently available on Netflix is a YA science-fiction movie directed by McG, titled “Pretties.” The story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world where, upon turning sixteen, people undergo surgical procedures to become “Pretties.” Joey King plays the role of Tally Youngblood, a young girl who witnesses her friend Peris (Chase Stokes) undergoing a drastic transformation following his surgery.
In the film adaptation, the storyline deviates from the books by elevating Peris’s significance, as she plays a more prominent role. After the operation, Peris is presented with an opportunity to transform into a “Special”, a “Pretty” endowed with supernatural powers, whose task it is to capture rogue “Uglies”.
In the movie, Westerfeld stated that it was more suitable for the plot to focus on Stokes’ character rather than Peris betraying Tally, as it worked out better for the screen.
In the books, Peris gradually loses significance as a character, often showing cowardice on numerous occasions, according to Westerfeld’s statement to Deadline.
He resembles Tally, but without her determination or the influence of Shay. So, he represents an alternate path she didn’t take, and that’s intriguing in a subtle, almost poetic manner,” he noted.
However, films often feature distinct narratives with broader plotlines. To set him apart and portray his betrayal in a unique, proactive manner, we felt it necessary to create a more significant twist for the story.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share some intriguing insights from director McG regarding the gripping finale of our beloved series, Uglies. However, if you haven’t had the pleasure of watching it yet, I would strongly advise pausing your reading here to fully appreciate the climactic twist when you eventually do watch it. Enjoy!
Towards the end, Peris experiences a significant realization alongside Tally, just before he plummets from a rooftop. The outcome of his journey remains uncertain, mirroring the enigmatic nature of his allegiances.
McG expressed, ‘I hope to spark curiosity among viewers: is he living inside or not? Is he virtuous or wicked?’ The question becomes, has Cable triumphed or was it his loyalty to a friend that prevailed in the end? I enjoy tales that delve into such complex feelings.
As an eager fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we might get the opportunity to delve deeper into the unresolved mysteries hinted at in Westerfeld’s series, potentially through a sequel film. However, Netflix has not officially announced plans for a second movie as of now.
