Uglies ending explained: What happened to Peris?

As a lifelong fan of dystopian literature who has spent countless hours pondering over the fates of fictional characters, I must say that the ending of “Uglies” leaves me both intrigued and amused. The book’s adaptation for Netflix adds an exciting twist to the storyline, with Peris playing a more significant role than in the original novel.

Readers who eagerly anticipate Scott Westerfeld’s book “Uglies” will no longer need to endure a protracted wait, as the wait for its screen adaptation has come to an end at last.

18 years since its initial announcement, I can’t help but feel excited that “Uglies” has finally made its way onto Netflix! And four years after Joey King took on the role of executive producer, her leadership has brought this fascinating story to life. As Tally Youngblood, I find myself on the brink of a transformative surgery, but a shocking secret I stumble upon threatens to shake up my world entirely.

In the film, events unfold much like readers might expect based on the book, but there’s a significant shift in the climax that could catch fans off guard.

To elucidate the significant shift from book to screen, let’s dive deep into some crucial plot points as we examine the conclusion of “Uglies” and discuss if the destiny of Peris has undergone any alteration.

Uglies ending explained

To clarify, “Uglies” generally follows the same course as the book, with Tally being assigned by Dr. Cable to locate The Smoke and uncover the weapon they are constructing to demolish the city. If she fails in this task, Tally will never undergo the procedure to transform into a Pretty.

Despite appearances, the operation being conducted hides a significant secret that won’t shock those familiar with dystopian sci-fi narratives. This procedure not only transforms Uglies into Pretties, but also embeds lesions within their brains to subdue them and ensure compliance.

After learning the truth from David’s parents, Az and Maddy, Tally tosses the locket gifted by Cable into the flames, believing she had just eliminated the tracking device within it. Regrettably, much like in the novel, setting the locket ablaze instead triggers its activation.

The following day, Cable arrives at The Smoke accompanied by a large group of Specially-enhanced individuals, whom we know as the ‘Specials’. In contrast to the book version, Peris, one of Tally’s friends, has been transformed into a Special earlier in the film by Cable, and he is part of the force that appears at The Smoke.

Tally and David successfully conceal themselves while Cable gathers everyone else, even their parents. To coerce Maddy into disclosing David’s location and her research on curing the lesions, Cable makes Peris end Az’s life by snapping his neck. (This version uses more common phrases and simpler sentence structures to improve readability.)

In this adaptation, instead of Az succumbing to death like in the book, he passes away on the operating table during a groundbreaking memory modification surgery performed by Cable.

Tally and David come up with a plan to rescue all the Smokies, including her friend Shay and David’s mother, who have all been taken to the city to undergo the surgery. They arrive too late to save Shay though, who has already been turned into a Pretty.

David, along with Tally and Maddy, are apprehended by Cable, but luckily, Croy swoops in on a helicopter to liberate them and demolish the lab. Just before their getaway, Maddy grabs the crucial nanosynth needed for the antidote to heal her brain lesions.

Once more, Peris reappears with an intention to hinder them, but Tally believes she might trigger a memory in him regarding their past. However, before she manages to do so, David confronts Peris with vengeance for his father’s demise. In the ensuing struggle, when Peris gains the advantage, Tally shoves Peris away from David instead.

As Peris precariously hangs onto the edge of the rooftop, he gazes at Tally, and in a familiar way, addresses her as “Squint” – his affectionate nickname for her. Moments later, Peris loses his grip and plummets into the waters below, leaving his outcome uncertain (further details to follow).

Once everyone is secure, Maddy discloses that she can manufacture the cure right away, but requires a volunteer. Since Shay doesn’t want to transform back into an Ugly, Tally steps up and offers herself as the test subject: “I’ll serve as your guinea pig. They’ll change me first, then you’ll restore me afterward.

In a rephrased manner, here is the sentence: Tally elects to remain and allows herself to be taken captive again by Cable, uttering the closing statement from the book as Cable approaches: “I am Tally Youngblood. Transform me back to my beautiful self.

In the film, we transition to a later period where Tally resides in a urban dwelling, transformed into a Pretty. Yet, when she gazes upon her hand, there remains her old scar from childhood – a reminder of her past identity.

Is Peris dead at the end of Uglies?

Besides pondering if there will be a movie sequel following the book sequel titled “Pretties”, it’s natural to question what happens to Peris, given the alterations in the original storyline.

In the story, Peris is not seen afterwards following his successful persuasion of Tally to aid Cable in locating The Smoke. This event occurs in both the book and the movie, but in the film, Peris assumes a more significant role after being transformed into a Special – an occurrence that does not take place in the novel.

He can be found in both “Pretties” and “Specials”, which are the final books of the initial trilogy. However, just because Peris didn’t meet his end by falling off a roof in the “Uglies” book, it doesn’t automatically mean he’d survive if there’s a movie adaptation featuring sequels.

In the novel Uglies, Peris isn’t shown as dead; instead, he vanishes into deep waters. This leaves room for speculation about his survival if there is a sequel. Though this may seem implausible, it’s worth considering the change in his character from an ordinary citizen to a Special – a transformation that might imply he could return.

In the novels, characters known as Specials possess advanced physical enhancements such as tough ceramic bones and medical nanotechnology that speed up healing processes. It’s plausible that these traits could explain Peris surviving a fall, implying it’s likely he won’t meet his end in the story.

However, it’s important to note that the success of “Uglies” on Netflix needs to reach a significant level first, before we can discuss the possibility of a sequel and his fate within it.
