Ubisoft Confirms Reports of Possible Buyout, Says it 'Regularly Reviews Strategic Options'

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation about the latest news surrounding Ubisoft. The potential takeover by Tencent, or going private altogether, is a move that could significantly impact the gaming industry, and more importantly, the games we love to play.

Just recently, there’s been talk about Ubisoft and the Guillemot family potentially making Ubisoft a private company, with Tencent showing interest in acquisition. This information has been acknowledged by Ubisoft, who have stated that they are always exploring various strategic possibilities, but no definitive decisions have been made as of now.

At present, Tencent holds approximately 10% ownership of Ubisoft. Rumors of a potential acquisition, with early talks said to be happening between Tencent and the Guillemot Brothers, have led to a significant increase in Ubisoft’s share price – nearly 40%. This surge comes after a decline in the company’s stock price, which was initially caused by poor performance of the game “Star Wars Outlaws”.

This incident saw Ubi’s stock plummeting to a ten-year low, and the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows from November 2024 to February 2025 has further exacerbated the situation. However, Ubisoft remains committed to its primary objectives, which revolve around two main areas: open-world storytelling and service-based gaming experiences.

A representative from Ubisoft has acknowledged rumors about possible interest in the company that have been circulating in the media. They routinely explore various strategic possibilities to benefit their shareholders, and they will disclose any relevant information to the public when necessary,” stated the spokesperson for Ubisoft to VGC.

The Company emphasizes that at the moment, their main priorities lie in implementing their strategic plan, which primarily concentrates on two major sectors: Open World Adventures and Game-as-a-Service (GaaS) native experiences.

The game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” will be released for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on the 14th of February, 2025. Regarding Ubisoft becoming a private company, there’s currently no definitive decision made about that.
