Ubisoft Announces Formation of ‘Dedicated Subsidiary’ Focused on Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six

Ubisoft has unveiled plans to establish a separate company division that will exclusively handle the development of the “Assassin’s Creed,” “Far Cry,” and “Rainbow Six” series, marking a significant change in their business strategy.

Tencent, a Chinese corporation, has invested approximately 1.16 billion euros ($1.25 billion USD) for a roughly 25% share in one of Ubisoft’s subsidiaries. Notably, intellectual properties such as The Division and Ghost Recon are not part of this subsidiary; instead, they will remain under Ubisoft’s control. New intellectual properties being developed by the subsidiary will exist separately from Ubisoft’s existing IP portfolio. In other words, both the subsidiary’s IP and Ubisoft’s original IP like The Division and Ghost Recon will continue to be created simultaneously.

In their recent statement, Ubisoft revealed that the new branch of their company is dedicated to creating game environments intended to remain fresh and compatible across multiple platforms. With additional funding and enhanced creative abilities, this division aims to improve the quality of single-player storylines, frequently update multiplayer options, introduce free-to-play elements, and incorporate more social aspects within the games.

Ubisoft states that the partnership with Tencent was established through a formal, competitive process as part of their previously announced exploration of various strategic options. They plan to devote attention and resources to growing their other popular series such as The Division, Ghost Recon, and more.

Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft, stated that today marks a fresh chapter in the company’s story. As we speed up our transition, this move lays the groundwork for altering Ubisoft’s business approach to allow us to be adaptable and ambitious. Our aim is to develop robust game environments intended to endure, cultivate strong brands that consistently perform well, and create innovative intellectual properties using advanced and upcoming technologies.

Guillemot mentioned that the autonomous leadership team within the subsidiary will work on shaping these three brands (Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six) into distinctive environments or ecosystems. In essence, their goal is to secure a prosperous future and expansion for those franchise properties.

Tencent President Martin Lau noted the great opportunity for these franchises to transform into lasting, always-relevant game platforms that can provide exciting new gaming experiences.

It remains uncertain how the establishment of the new subsidiary will affect employees in Ubisoft Montreal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia. Yet, with Tencent’s significant investment, and “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” garnering success among 3 million players at the time of writing, this development might contribute to the company’s stability following a challenging phase.
