Tyrese Gibson says arrest after being found in contempt of court was 'very traumatic'

As a seasoned movie buff with a soft spot for action-packed flicks and melodramatic tales, I’ve seen my fair share of courtroom dramas. But Tyrese Gibson‘s latest chapter feels like it could rival even the most gripping of those narratives.

On Tuesday, Tyrese Gibson spoke out regarding his arrest in Georgia, following a court ruling that found him in contempt due to unpaid child support.

On Monday, the star of “The Fast and the Furious” series was apprehended following a court order by Judge Kevin M. Farmer of Fulton County Superior Court. The order required the actor to pay his ex-wife, Samantha Lee, approximately $73,500, as their divorce in 2020 concluded after three years of marriage.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve learned that Mel Gibson found himself in a tough spot recently, facing charges of “willful contempt” for apparently not fulfilling child support obligations towards his 5-year-old daughter, Soraya. It’s important to note that he is also the father of Shayla, a 17-year-old girl he shares with ex-wife Norma Mitchell. This judgment came during Gibson’s third hearing on contempt charges, and as per court documents reviewed this week by The Times, the judge stated that the actor would need to be detained until he settled the payments in question.

Apart from the actor himself, his representatives have indicated their intention to challenge the verdict by filing an appeal notice. However, Gibson’s representatives have yet to provide a comment regarding our requests for one, as of Tuesday, which was reported by The Times.

Yesterday, according to TMZ, Mel Gibson was escorted out of a courtroom in handcuffs following a ruling that he had disobeyed the court. The New York Post stated that Gibson was temporarily taken into custody and subsequently released when he didn’t meet his $10,000 monthly obligation for child support as ordered by the court.

According to TMZ reports, the singer known for his hit “Sweet Lady” was freed from detention after his lawyer, Tanya Mitchell Graham, submitted an appeal on his behalf. This appeal granted him some extra time without needing to settle any outstanding back child support payments first. It’s worth noting that a similar appeal was made by Gibson’s attorney in April 2023, during the heated divorce proceedings between the former couple. The court initially ordered Gibson to make child support payments at this time.

In a post on Instagram Stories, the star of “Morbius” spoke about his arrest on Tuesday, expressing it as an extremely distressing event rather than enjoyable. He questioned why Judge Kevin M. Farmer seems to have such strong animosity towards him, saying “One might wonder, does this judge dislike me intensely?” In a subsequent story, he also hinted at the challenges of being arrested and mentioned his ex-wife’s attorney specifically.

In addition to his submission, Gibson provided Google Drive links for documents from May 13, 2024, depicting the case as a challenging ordeal for the judge. Although it’s uncertain if these papers have been officially filed, they outline three significant points of contention and dispute the child-support claim as excessive and punitive.

Initially, lawyers Graham and Beverly L. Cohen contended that during the divorce proceedings between their client, Gibson, and Lee, an arbitrator ruled that the prenuptial agreement between them was legally valid but somehow nullified a section pertaining to legal expenses. (Lee is requesting $7,500 in compensation for attorney fees.)

2nd, Gibson’s lawyers stated that he has been willingly providing financial assistance for Soraya since her birth and throughout their divorce case up to the maximum Child Support Obligation set by law. They contended that granting a backdated, one-time child support payment could discourage other divorcing individuals from voluntarily supporting their minor children financially during the divorce process without needing a preliminary hearing or court order first.

In the end, they claimed that Gibson effectively provided spousal support by raising Lee’s child support payments significantly, which enabled her to purchase a house, work fewer hours, and contribute half towards their child’s school fees. It’s important to note that the court found no need for alimony in this case. (The document stated that “the trial court ruled there was no justification for alimony.”)

Rather than praising Gibson for performing his duty of financially supporting the minor child without a court order, the document indicates that he was penalized for doing what was morally correct.

The attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On Sunday, Gibson shared on Instagram his views about his ex’s legal tactics, labeling them as “quirkily unwise.” He further emphasized that he maintains his innocence as their prenuptial agreement supposedly accounted for all aspects of their 2020 divorce. Additionally, before and following his arrest, Gibson posted a series of messages expressing the essence of fatherhood.
