Tyler Perry has set a streaming record on Netflixwith his latest comedy movie.
Tyler Perry’s new comedy, Joe’s College Road Trip, has quickly become a streaming hit, breaking records just days after its release. As a spin-off of Perry’s popular Madea series, the movie centers on Joe Simmons (Perry), Madea’s brother, and his grandson, B.J. (Jermaine Harris), as they embark on a college road trip. It premiered on February 13, 2026.
Netflix has announced that Joe’s College Road Trip was the most-watched English-language movie on the platform during its first week, attracting 12.5 million viewers. This marks the biggest opening week for a comedy movie on Netflix in 2026, and is the film’s first record achievement on the service.
As a big fan of the Madea movies, I always know what I’m getting – Tyler Perry writing, directing, and producing everything through his Tyler Perry Productions. This latest one is the fourteenth movie in the series, which is wild! But what’s really different this time is that it’s the first Madea film since 2009’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself to focus on someone other than Madea as the main character. It’s a cool change of pace, honestly.
As a movie fan, I’ve noticed the Madea films consistently do really well on Netflix – they’ve put out the last eight! It’s kind of surprising, though, because critics and general audiences haven’t always been thrilled with them. Looking at Joe’s College Road Trip on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is just 51%, and even though there isn’t a critics’ score, about half of all the reviews are negative. It’s interesting how popular they are despite that!
Despite mixed reviews, Perry’s films continue to do well, and his newest movie has caught Netflix’s attention. The film is proving to be a big hit with audiences, making it a successful comedy for the franchise, even if critics haven’t praised it as much.
It’s unclear how long the movie will stay at number one, but Netflix’s next comedy isn’t scheduled until the film 53 Sundays arrives on March 27, 2026. Still, given Tyler Perry’s popularity, the Madea spinoff is expected to remain a hit for the streaming service.
Despite mixed reviews, Joe’s College Road Trip highlights the continued success of Tyler Perry’s Madea films on Netflix. The franchise consistently attracts a large audience, which explains its ongoing popularity. After just one week of release, the movie still has the potential to perform very well.
