As a lifestyle expert with over three decades of television viewing under my belt, I must say that the return of BBC’s iconic game shows, Only Connect and University Challenge, is a delightful throwback to the golden era of quizzing. Having watched these shows since their inception and even participating in a local version of University Challenge back in college, I can attest to their ability to test one’s knowledge and intellect.

Two iconic BBC game shows, much-loved by fans, will be back on your screens soon following the unanimous praise for the new host.

On Monday, August 12, both “Only Connect” and “University Challenge” make a comeback on BBC Two, marking the start of what’s being called “Quiz Nights” every Monday.

28 university teams from around the United Kingdom will compete against each other in University Challenge, aiming to secure the title of champions.

Host Amol Rajan poses the queries while students from various regions take on the toughest exams available.

The teams are going to be challenged extensively, as they’ll need to demonstrate their understanding across a wide range of topics related to global human thinking, accomplishments, and cultural aspects, by answering questions about these subjects.

The well-known melody signals the comeback of intense and highly competitive games, starring our country’s top scholars, accompanied by the distinctive voice of commentator Roger Tilling.

The teams are set to compete, representing universities and university colleges across each of the United Kingdom’s four countries.

Having grown up watching countless hours of television and being an avid sports fan, I can confidently say that this summer has been a thrilling ride for screen enthusiasts like myself. The competition we’ve witnessed has been nothing short of extraordinary, with nail-biting finishes, heart-stopping drama, and undeniable displays of talent that have truly shone. It’s been a testament to the power of storytelling and sportsmanship on our screens, making this summer one for the books in my personal viewing history.

‘And the thrilling new series of University Challenge continues in that vein. The standards are high, the students are magnificent, and the starters for 10 as addictive as ever. Please join us!’

Kalpna Patel-Knight, the BBC’s Head of Entertainment Commissioning, expressed: “The debut series of Amol on University Challenge astonished viewers.”

‘Really excited he is back with more incredible University teams going head to head.

“The upcoming series is guaranteed to have viewers excitedly engaging with it once more, and I can hardly wait for the next thrilling highlight!”

In March, some long-time viewers of University Challenge, who have been tuning in since the show first aired in 1962, praised him as the best host the show has ever had on social media.

One fan gushed: ‘Possibly controversial but Amol Rajan is my favourite University Challenge quizmaster – and I’ve watched it since the 1960s.’

An additional comment: “Since 1996, I’ve been a devoted fan of University Challenge, often referred to as a ‘Paxman enthusiast.’ In fact, I might still be one today.”

I truly savor observing Amol Rajan host; it’s fast, energetic, and deeply personal – simply outstanding!
