Two John Cenas? The Shocking Twist in Peacemaker Season 2 You Can’t Miss!
In the trailer for Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” John Cena’s character encounters a different version of himself. This antihero named Peacemaker, also known as Christopher Smith, was initially presented in the 2021 movie “The Suicide Squad.” Later, this falcon-emblematic hero received his own spin-off series on Max, premiering in 2022. Notably, “Peacemaker” is one of the rare productions that continues from the old DC Universe to the new one led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The initial trailer for Season 2 of Peacemaker hints at even more absurd journeys for Cena’s character, with one involving a confrontation against another version of the Peacemaker character. The closing moments of the sneak peek depict Cena’s character in everyday attire walking towards an unusual door, only to be confronted by another fully armed Peacemaker who has him at gunpoint inside.
The two versions of the Peacemakers can be told apart by slight variations in their costumes. The newer one displays an eagle symbol in white, pointing to its right side, whereas the original Peacemaker’s eagle symbol is yellow and points to its left side.
It’s uncertain which of the two Peacemakers will emerge victorious from this encounter. In a previous trailer, though, Peacemaker (wearing a new costume) can be spotted dashing through Auggie Smith’s Quantum Unfolding Storage Area, accompanied by Leota, played by Danielle Brooks.
Either the duplicate Peacemaker emerged victorious and now occupies the role previously held by the original, or the original Peacemaker defeated his counterpart and adopted the double’s new costume following their encounter.
In a fresh twist for the upcoming season of Peacemaker, there may be elements that hint at a multiverse, allowing for multiple versions of the same character. This could serve as the show’s strategy for bridging the gap between the old DC Universe and its revitalized form, given that it is one of the few productions that straddle both eras.
In a conversation on Threads, James Gunn (director of Peacemaker and head of DC Studios) stated that Season 2 of the show essentially follows directly from where Season 1 ended, with just a few minor adjustments. This implies that the transition between DC Universes won’t have a major effect. Gunn has confirmed that everything in Peacemaker is part of the new DC Universe, except for the Justice League appearance in the Season 1 finale. This should make it straightforward for viewers unaware of the behind-the-scenes changes in the DCU to keep watching the series.
In Season 2 of “Peacemaker”, we see the return of Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, and Steve Agee, as well as Frank Grillo portraying Rick Flag Sr., and a fresh character, played by Michael Rooker. The second season will premiere on Max on August 21, following the release of Gunn’s “Superman” movie.
Why Are There Two Peacemakers?
The mystery arises due to the existence of two different versions of Cena’s Peacemaker characters in the DC Universe, causing fans to speculate wildly. One popular theory suggests that the Multiverse might be employed to address some of the inconsistencies between the old and new DCU, with Season 2 of Peacemaker merging one character with the identity of the old DCU and another with the new DCU (with the possibility of eliminating the original one later on). However, Gunn has openly expressed on Threads that he prefers to keep the universe shift from becoming a significant part of the story.
It’s conceivable that the Quantum Unfolding Storage Area might conceal mysteries which the Peacemaker has yet to discover. Maybe it houses a gateway that transports to various points in time, suggesting this incarnation of Peacemaker could be an earlier or later version of the character, thereby opening up possibilities for the series to delve into time travel themes.
One possibility is that the character known as Twin Peacemaker might be a genetically engineered duplicate, created either to evaluate or substitute the current Peacemaker. With Sean Gunn’s character, Maxwell Lord, now confirmed in Peacemaker, it’s plausible that cloning could play a role in his future schemes. It’s even speculated that Auggie may have prepared contingencies, such as cloning his son for some sinister purpose.
A different, more elaborate idea circulating among fans suggests that the Peacemaker depicted here might not be the real one, perhaps portrayed by the shape-shifting antagonist Clayface, who is set to debut in an upcoming DC Universe film. To uncover the facts, viewers will need to watch Season 2 of Peacemaker.
