Two important superhero movies will battle at the box office next July
As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in both DC and Marvel universes, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and excitement about the upcoming box office showdown between Superman and The Fantastic Four.
The initial film within James Gunn’s DC Universe is planned for release on July 11, 2025, in cinemas. As one of the key figures overseeing this shared universe, Gunn has decided to both write and direct Superman, which was previously known as Superman: Legacy. Positioning it for release in mid-July might boost its potential as a successful summer blockbuster
As a diehard fan, I’m thrilled about the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25, 2025, just two weeks following “Superman.” Naturally, Marvel Studios aims to carve out a significant chunk of the superhero movie market with this Fantastic Four debut, potentially impacting some of “Superman’s” ticket sales. It’s not the first time two iconic comic book characters have clashed on the big screen, but this upcoming box office face-off promises to be one for the history books
Unlike the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux and Venom: The Last Dance, which hit theaters this October, the Superman and Fantastic Four reboots carry significant weight for their respective universes. The former is part of DC’s Elseworlds series, while the latter is a Sony-produced Marvel production. Both may mark the end of their sub-series and could potentially generate less competition in terms of box office earnings
Instead, it’s worth noting that Superman will kick off the DCU’s fresh cinematic universe, with numerous projects in the pipeline to tie into this flagship event. Conversely, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is not the first movie in its franchise, being the 37th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it carries significant weight for its studio as it introduces a substantial cast of characters who could shape the future success of the MCU
In simpler terms, if Superman’s popularity continues into the release of Fantastic Four, it might overshadow the debut of the Marvel family in the MCU. Conversely, if Superman doesn’t perform well at the box office, the upcoming movie First Steps could overshadow the start of DC movies and potentially dampen the new franchise
Previously, a direct competition between DC’s expanded universe and the MCU occurred in November 2017. The opening weekend of “Thor: Ragnarok” in early November grossed over $120 million domestically. In contrast, just two weeks later, “Justice League” struggled to earn $100 million in its initial weekend. Given that “Justice League” was intended to be DC’s response to Marvel’s billion-dollar Avengers successes, the poor box office performance made the defeat for DC and Warner Brothers all the more humiliating
A source close to the DC team was reportedly quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying that it would be a source of embarrassment if a secondary character from Marvel surpassed the main team from DC in box office earnings. However, after the final numbers were tallied, “Thor: Ragnarok” amassed $855 million globally, while “Justice League” reached only $661 million
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at how Deadpool and Wolverine left their mark on the big screen this past July, outshining numerous superhero movies and proving that summer is still the golden season for blockbusters. The anticipation for “Barbenheimer” in July 2023 has been building, and I can’t help but wonder if Superman or Fantastic Four (or maybe even both) will set new box office records next July. The competition will be fierce, with the possibility of cinematic collisions, as they’ll need to navigate around Jurassic World: Rebirth, another highly-anticipated release slated for the same month in 2024. It’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds!
Ragnarok did compared to Justice League, it could potentially harm the financial future of the underperforming studio
