Twitch unbans Donald Trump
As a long-time gamer and avid Twitch viewer, I have witnessed many political developments unfold on the platform, but none quite as controversial as the recent unbanning of former President Donald Trump. I remember the shock and concern that swept through the gaming community when Twitch suspended his account following the January 6 Capitol attack. It seemed like a necessary move to ensure the safety and integrity of the platform.
Twitch believes there is “value” in hearing from Presidential nominees directly.
On July 19, Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, announced the lifting of the ban on Donald Trump’s channel.
On January 20, 2021, just after the US Capitol in Washington DC was stormed by thousands of his supporters on January 6, Twitch permanently banned the former US president (2017-2021). The reason given by Twitch was the continued potential for inciting violence.
Currently, Twitch has changed direction in response to the heated U.S. presidential race, making this shift only six days after an assassination attempt against Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. During this event, Trump was injured when a shot rang out near him and was compelled to leave the premises, ensured by Secret Service agents for his safety.
Why did Twitch unban Donald Trump?
Twitch spoke with journalist Rod “Slasher” Breslau and shared this explanation: Trump is welcome back on Twitch for live streaming if he chooses to do so, according to the company’s statement to Slasher.
Twitch restored the account of the former president, Trump. We think it’s important to let presidential candidates speak for themselves whenever feasible. Currently, Trump holds the Republican Party’s nomination for the U.S. presidency.
Twitch will continue keeping an eye on Trump’s account, just like they do with everyone else’s, as stated by Breslau.
