As a dedicated moviegoer with a deep appreciation for thrilling and action-packed films, I was absolutely thrilled to read about the latest blockbuster sensation, “Twisters.” Having grown up in the Midwest where tornadoes are an all-too-real part of the natural landscape, my fascination with these powerful and unpredictable forces has only intensified over the years.
Critics have labeled Twister as the “big hit of the summer” for its gripping portrayal of tornados on the big screen, with the film making its debut in cinemas nearly three decades after the initial release.
In the upcoming sequel, Daisy Edgar-Jones from “Normal People” and Glen Powell known for his role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” go head-to-head as fierce storm chasers. This thrilling adventure has been hailed as the most exceptional cinematic experience since the release of “Maverick” in 2022, which grossed an impressive $1B at the box office.
In her glowing five-star review, Maddy Mussen from The Standard characterized Twisters as an experience that is both exhilarating and evocative. She identified Daisy and Glenn as compelling and authentic leading characters.
Despite the movie not explicitly addressing climate change, it still managed to deliver an exciting and thought-provoking experience that left me craving for more.
At the same time, The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey found the film equally captivating and awarded it a rating of four out of five stars. She described the narrative as “powerfully intense and eerily frightening.”

The callbacks (to the original) are pleasantly limited, yet it retains an reassuringly classic vibe. Here, CGI harmoniously coexists with an abundance of conventional special effects.
In The Telegraph, Robbie Collin heaped praises and declared the film as a top-notch cinematic adventure, matching the excellence of “Top Gun: Maaverick” since its release.
I’m genuinely astounded by the remarkable simplicity of this formula. It’s hard to believe that something so effective could have ever gone out of style. In my own experience as a storyteller, I’ve come across countless characters who embody the spirit of “everyday heroes.” These are people who, despite their ordinary lives, possess an extraordinary ability to captivate and inspire us.
Instead of “Time and again, the film uses the Spielberg technique of showing actors’ reactions to peril for longer periods than the peril itself,” you could say, “The film frequently focuses more on the actors’ frightened expressions and wide-eyed gazes during dangerous situations than on the dangers themselves.”
According to The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, the movie labeled as a “fun film” was somewhat shy in addressing the topic of climate change and its impact on our weather.
In simpler terms, he interpreted the tornado as a symbol representing an impending intense moment of pleasure in the blossoming relationship between the two main characters.
In her review for the movie, Beth Webb from the Empire wrote that it earned four stars from her and described the action as having “the intensity and fear factor of a horror film.”
‘Simply put, Twisters wears its Big Summer Movie heart on its sleeve’.

At some point, our brave protagonists invite crowds to seek refuge in a cinema during a storm. It would be wise of you to follow suit.
In his four-star review for Daily Mail, Brian Viner expressed that he laughed even harder during “Twisters” due to the excessive attempts to transform the weather into a monster film.
Tornados tearing through Oklahoma bear an uncanny resemblance to monstrous creatures like Godzilla, extraterrestrial invaders, or the Great White shark from Jaws. No one, not even renowned meteorologist Kate Cooper (portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones in Normal People), suggests they could be a result of climate change.
Lee Isaac Chung’s film is full of vigor and excitement as it unfolds. Kate, who is looking for redemption after a tragic event five years prior, teams up with an intriguing man named Tyler Owens, portrayed by Glen Powell, who styles himself as a “tornado-wrangler.” Together, they aim to prove that tornadoes can be shrunk through scientific means.
Although this could be completely meaningless, it’s still an enjoyable watch. Harry Hadden-Paton delivers humorous performances as the clumsy British journalist, reporting on the bizarre event of chasing tornados through the vast American prairies to pen a story.

Another possibility: If you’re like me and trust that individuals who mention “super-absorbent polymers” in their speech are well-informed, then their statements could be plausible, even if they seem nonsensical to some.
By the way, I attended the European premiere of Twisters in London last week, and its director, Chung, made an appearance. He joked, “I hope this weather in London will make all of you forget about complaining.”
We cannot guarantee that promise. Just as it’s unrealistic to expect us to remain silent about the weather, it’s an essential part of our culture to complain about it, similar to giving up tea or expressing admiration for Sir David Attenborough – it goes against who we are as a people.
As a lifestyle expert, I understand what he means, but in my experience, we still value the importance of stepping outside our homes and engaging with the world around us. While technology has made it easier to connect remotely, there’s something special about experiencing new places firsthand. So, I appreciate his perspective, but let’s not forget the value of exploration and adventure in our daily lives.
