Twisters director explains why kiss scene was cut

As a huge fan of disaster movies and romantic arcs, I was both thrilled and disappointed by the ending of “Twisters.” The chemistry between Glen Powell’s Tyler Owens and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Kate Cooper was palpable throughout the film, leaving viewers anticipating a romantic payoff. However, the absence of their long-awaited airport kiss in the final edit felt like an unnecessary letdown.

Twisters spoilers follow.

Disaster movie enthusiasts now have a new offering to look forward to with “Twisters.” In this film, Glen Powell as Tyler Owens and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper engage in a romantic journey marked by initial rivalry. The heartfelt development unfolds amidst the chaos brought about by fearsome tornadoes.

Viewers, with their romantic hearts engaged, may have expected a kiss between the two characters after hours of flirting on screen. However, the movie’s conclusion fell short of delivering this anticipated moment, leaving some viewers feeling let down. This was all the more disappointing given that leaked footage revealed that the actors had filmed a scene at the airport where they did in fact share a kiss.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Powell disclosed the filming of the kiss scene, yet Chung opted to exclude it from the movie’s final version as the director.

“I find it slightly disappointing that they didn’t opt for using it, but perhaps it was due to my skills, I’m not certain.” (Powell added with a chuckle.)

I was surprised when Chung didn’t include passionate scenes in his game’s movie mode. But later on, he shared with us why that was the case. He mentioned that nowadays, audiences are less interested in seeing intense emotions displayed openly on the screen.

Chung expressed that public opinion on whether they want to see a kiss or not has shifted. He attempted to include a kiss in his performance, but the reaction was divided – it wasn’t due to the way the kiss was executed.

As a gamer, I’d say: “I filmed an alternative take that day without the kiss, and you know what? I prefer it. It feels like a more satisfying conclusion. For those craving a smooch between these characters, they can assume it’s coming eventually. Let’s give them some privacy for that moment. This ending is all about bringing closure to the story in an uplifting manner.”

Edgar-Jones explained later that they decided not to show a kiss between them in the movie to avoid making their romantic storyline the climax. Instead, Kate’s adventure into storm chasing became the film’s main focus.

According to her, the concluding scene of them leaving the airport to pursue another storm was “reinvigorating.” Moreover, Powell described it as their unique way of expressing love and emphasized that the thrill of the chase is the essence of their romantic connection.

“If the story concludes with a kiss, it may give the impression that Kate’s entire journey was merely leading up to that moment. However, it would be more satisfying if the narrative ended with her continuing her actions with a grin.”

Twisters is now out in UK and US cinemas.
