Twilight’s Biggest Plot Holes STILL Make Me Mad!

Thirteen years have passed since the Twilight Saga concluded, yet Kristen Stewart remains primarily recognized for her groundbreaking portrayal of Bella Swan, even as she expands her professional repertoire and revamps her public persona. As the central character, she first appeared in the high school setting of the initial movie, where she crosses paths with Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen. Both actors achieved stardom through this series, though much of the attention was unfavorable due to the storyline, their performances, and the inconsistencies within the franchise being criticized.

It could be a controversial viewpoint regarding well-known films, but it seems Kristen Stewart, who faced criticism for her monotone acting in the past, may not be solely responsible. If anything, the direction and weak script might bear equal or even more blame. However, Stewart’s acting abilities have become evident in her newer movies like “Love Lies Bleeding,” a standout thriller from 2024. What I find most frustrating about those films, though, is not just Stewart’s lack of facial expression as Bella, but the numerous plot inconsistencies. From an unconvincing portrayal of vampirism to storylines that don’t add up, these movies leave much to be desired in terms of coherence and logical flow.

Alice Cullen’s Source of Income

The stock market does not stay stable for long

Alice Cullen possesses the ability to glimpse into potential future events. Yet, her foresight isn’t constant or consistent. It can alter based on current situations; if something occurs that alters the course of events, it affects what she might foresee in her visions. The fluidity of the future is reflected in her powers and represents one of its main disadvantages, as portrayed at various points throughout the films. The sole instance when she experiences a clear vision is when someone makes a decision and adheres to it, allowing her to predict the consequences of that decision on their life.

In the series, it’s noted that Alice employs her abilities to foresee stock market trends to aid her family in amassing wealth. This forecast knowledge allows them to live extravagantly. However, since Alice’s visions might be altered by current events influencing future outcomes, it seems inconceivable for this scheme to work consistently given that stock prices fluctuate frequently due to unforeseen circumstances, which should in turn affect her predictions as well.

Bella’s Relationship With Her Mother

For someone so close to Bella, her mother rarely appears

Although Twilight primarily revolves around Bella’s life with her father in Forks, Washington following their move, it’s evident from the beginning that she cherishes her relationship with her mother more. Since her parents’ separation, Bella had been residing with her mother. Given that Bella hadn’t dated anyone prior to this, they spent a significant amount of time together. It’s well-known that Bella holds a deep affection for her mother, and while she doesn’t dislike her father, there’s a noticeable awkwardness between them.

In the Twilight movies, Bella’s mother isn’t present much, even though they seem to share a strong emotional bond. The films show only a few phone calls throughout the series, and she’s mostly absent except for significant moments like hospital visits or her wedding day. Given how close they appear to be, it seems strange that her mother doesn’t seem to influence Bella’s life-altering choices more. One of Bella Swan’s most questionable actions in the Twilight movies is cutting off her parents after turning into a vampire.

Edward Going To Italy To Die

There are easier ways to die than being killed by the Volturi

Indeed, it’s commonly believed that vampires are challenging to eliminate; however, if anyone has the expertise on how to do so, it would be another vampire themselves, as they learn about their own mortality early in existence to avoid falling victim to it. Thus, when Edward was contemplating his demise, he likely had a thorough understanding of the various methods available to him that could fulfill his wish.

It seems excessive for him to journey to Italy and provoke the Volturi with the intention of dying, given his circumstances. Although he was going through a deep emotional turmoil, it’s worth noting that Edward has been alive for quite some time. This level of drama, which tends to be characteristic of teenage characters in this genre, seems out of character for him, considering how carefully and strategically he usually behaves.

Jasper’s Effect on Bella’s Emotions

Bella is immune to vampire powers that affect her mind

From the outset of “Twilight”, it’s understood that Bella possesses an unusual resistance to the psychic abilities that vampires typically wield, such as mind-reading. This is why Edward can’t read her thoughts, for example. In fact, this mental barrier was so robust that not even the formidable Jane was able to inflict real pain on Bella; she could only manufacture a deceptive sensation of pain in Bella’s mind instead.

Nevertheless, Jasper’s abilities influence Bella’s feelings, extending as far as affecting her psychologically. Though author Stephenie Meyer later clarified how these powers operate, the explanation often felt like an effort to patch up a notable plot inconsistency. It appears that Jasper’s abilities are predominantly telekinetic, meaning they manipulate someone’s hormonal equilibrium, making his powers effective even against Bella’s mental barriers. This explanation strikes me as rather convenient since it is unique among the franchise’s powers in this regard.

Inconsistency in Alice’s Powers

Many situations could have been avoided if she had used them more

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at Alice Cullen’s extraordinary abilities among the vampire clan, setting her apart as one of the most formidable female vamps in the lore. If not for her powers being kept in check, she would have disrupted the narrative so profoundly that there wouldn’t be any room left for unexpected turns. Her power works uniquely, revealing only the future based on a firm decision someone has made. The only other known limitation is that her abilities are rendered ineffective when it comes to werewolves and those close to them. Yet, this doesn’t fully account for the times Alice seemed to miss Bella’s moves throughout the series.

In the series, Alice was often monitoring Bella, so she might have noticed significant events like Bella choosing James over Laurent. Moreover, despite the supernatural elements and complex decisions in The Twilight Sage: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, Alice was able to foresee the final battle’s outcome. In fact, she foresaw that Jacob would eventually imprint on Renesmee.

The Vampires’ Sparkling Skin

It doesn’t always sparkle

In my opinion, one of the standout aspects of Stephenie Meyer’s world in the Twilight movies is the radiant skin that the vampires possess. Unlike traditional vampire folklore where they must avoid daylight or risk turning into stone or disappearing, these vampires have skin that glimmers and sparkles like precious diamonds under sunlight. It’s truly captivating!

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice one persistent critique that often surrounds this beloved franchise: the inconsistency regarding a key aspect that distinguishes it from other vampire tales – the lack of consistent daylight sensitivity among the Cullens, a defining trait for them. Despite Forks, Washington being notoriously overcast all year and the Cullens avoiding sunny days, there seemed to be some sunlight almost every day in the series, which contradicts their supposed vulnerability to daylight. Moreover, despite their vampire nature, their skin never displayed any sparkle under the rare instances of sunlight, a detail that I believe could have added a captivating touch to the story.

Bella’s Ease With Being a Vampire

She has almost no difficulty controlling her bloodlust

One frequent topic of discussion about vampires in the Twilight series is the intense desire for blood that arises after transformation. This craving is inherent, and it can take many years to master self-control over it. For instance, even the youngest member of the Cullen family, Jasper, is depicted as still grappling with his bloodlust in The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

It appears that Bella has been trained to live as a vampire, and her mental barrier against vampire abilities indicates she’s unique among humans. However, the way she easily manages her bloodlust sometimes seems like an easy story device to move the plot forward rapidly. If Bella were struggling to resist her instincts towards humans or accidentally harming living beings, it wouldn’t have made for enjoyable young adult romance stories. Nevertheless, this doesn’t make the apparent plot inconsistency any less noticeable.

Jasper Loses Control Over His Bloodlust

A mere papercut is enough to set him off

The Cullen family, which includes Jasper, are part of normal society and the younger ones attend high school, despite being too old for such education. However, what irks me more than this inconsistency is another aspect. High school is a place where one often encounters blood due to sports injuries, fights, menstruation in adolescent girls, and even common accidents like paper cuts. Therefore, it’s logical to assume that the Cullens possess extraordinary self-control over their vampiric thirst for human blood.

If any member of the Cullen family had ever lost self-restraint at school, not only would their secret identity be exposed, but it could potentially put their lives at risk. Therefore, it stands to reason that they wouldn’t have attended school regularly unless they possessed exceptional self-control. However, in the book “New Moon“, Jasper Cullen has a severe reaction to a minor cut, requiring physical restraint to prevent him from attacking Bella. This makes one wonder how he could endure a daily school environment filled with bloody noses, scraped knees, and bruised knuckles if such a small injury was enough to upset him.

Bella Has Intoxicating Blood

Edward isn’t the only one who thinks so

Yes, the idea of a ‘singer’ in this context explains why Bella’s blood affects Edward strongly. Her blood stimulates a deep, instinctual response within him because it seems to sing to him. The underlying thought is that her blood influences only Edward, as each vampire has their own ‘singer’, and the singer’s blood impacts only that specific vampire, not others.

In the story of Twilight, we often see Bella’s blood as irresistible to vampires. It’s puzzling because she doesn’t have any unique genetic traits or a special diet that would make her blood so appealing. James appears to be more drawn to her blood than any other human, and even Alice comments on its pleasant smell at one point. While there are certainly other factors that suggest Bella is extraordinary in some way, it still leaves us wondering why her blood is so alluring. I think it’s worth exploring an explanation for this peculiarity.

Bella Becomes Pregnant

Vampire-human crossbreeding should be impossible

In the world of Twilight, the vampires do not age because their bodies are essentially deceased, lacking any blood circulation within them. However, author Stephenie Meyer later clarified that there is some form of fluid movement, specifically vampire venom. Though this revelation came after readers questioned how Edward could maintain an erection and impregnate Bella, it remains a plausible explanation.

Even though the description clarifies how Edward and Bella’s intimate relationship functions, it fails to address some significant concerns. The most pressing issue is that vampire sperm and human eggs seem incompatible, suggesting complications might arise. Additionally, mixing human blood with vampire venom poses risks and hazards, particularly for humans. Given these factors, the safety of a half-vampire, half-human fetus within Bella remains puzzling.
