Turns out another major DCEU star is coming back to the DCU after all
As a seasoned gamer and DC Comics enthusiast with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as the era of the DCEU comes to an end and ushers in a new chapter for DC Studios. While it’s always tough to say goodbye to iconic characters and actors we’ve grown attached to over the years, I understand that change is necessary for growth.
Under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, there’s been a significant shift that marks a fresh chapter for DC Comics, bringing about numerous alterations.
To initiate a fresh beginning for DC Comics by establishing a new interconnected universe aiming to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s necessary to conclude the storyline of the DCEU. With the DCEU drawing to a close, this signifies the end of several talented actors’ tenures playing iconic characters in the DCEU film series.
Despite the difficulty in letting go of this chapter – given that the DCEU showcased remarkable talents like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman – it’s essential to acknowledge that progress necessitates change. And change is definitely on the horizon, as a fresh wave of actors are stepping into the roles of cherished DC Comics characters who previously starred in the DCEU, and will now be key figures in the formation of the new DC Universe.
Yet, despite numerous transformations, some fortunate figures have been given the opportunity to shift from the DCEU to the DCU. Sean Gunn, John Cena, and Viola Davis are merely a few examples of those reprising roles they initially played in the DCEU, and it appears another name can be added to that group!
Xolo Maridueña is returning as Blue Beetle for a new TV show
In the scorching heat of last August, I was given an incredible opportunity – stepping into the shoes of DC’s latest superhero, Blue Beetle, and gracing the silver screen with his first-ever appearance on it.
Unfortunately, the release of Blue Beetle was marred by unfavorable circumstances. The movie came out during the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes, preventing the cast and creative team from promoting it effectively. Additionally, the timing was unfortunate as DC fans were already cautious about the film due to the DCEU’s conclusion, which made them hesitant to support it. Consequently, its box office performance wasn’t as strong as it deserved to be, given that the film was actually one of DC’s best productions!
In the leading role, Maridueña shone brightly, and the movie was overflowing with emotion. Those who watched it found themselves yearning for more. It seemed unlikely that we’d get to witness more of the character due to the upcoming changes in the DC Universe and the film’s financial difficulties, but it appears that the story of Maridueña’s Jamie Reyes isn’t over just yet.
It’s been confirmed that a fresh animated Blue Beetle series is under development, with Maridueña set to once again bring the main character to life on screen.
In a recent chat with Hablemos de Cine, Maridueña shared his enthusiasm for carrying on the Blue Beetle saga. It’s an honor for him, and he can hardly contain his anticipation to find out where Jaime’s journey leads. While it’s still early days, he’s convinced that this will soon become one of the wildest anime adventures yet!
At present, there’s not much information available regarding the project, but Deadline has revealed that Angel Manuel Soto, the director, and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the screenwriter of the 2023 film, will both take on executive producer roles. Additionally, John Rikard, who previously held this role in the film, is also expected to do so. With Maridueña set to voice the lead character, it appears likely that the series will be a spin-off or continuation of the movie, potentially setting up the character for future appearances within the live-action universe of DCU.
Indeed, since it’s clear that certain animated shows are intended to align with the DCU timeline, like the Creature Commandos, it seems logical for this Blue Beetle series to act as a connector and prepare the way for Maridueña to revisit the character. Essentially, we’re hoping to witness such an adaptation, considering it’s fitting that he dons the Blue Beetle suit once more in the universe Gunn is creating!
