Tulisa recalls the harrowing moment she was sexually assaulted after getting her drink spiked by someone who she believed was a friend
I cannot help but feel profound admiration for Tulisa Contostavlos as I delve deeper into her captivating life story. Her resilience and ability to transform adversity into personal growth is truly inspiring. The sexual assault she experienced, followed by the leak of a private video, would have broken many. Yet, Tulisa chose a different path. She bravely confronted her trauma, found solace in self-discovery, and emerged stronger than ever.
Tulisa Contostavlos has taken time to recall a distressing incident when she was sexually violated, following the drugging of her drink by an individual she thought was a trusted friend.
36-year-old celebrity from N-Dubz shared her heartbreaking experience during an open conversation on the We Need To Talk podcast hosted by Paul C Brunson. The unfortunate event transpired when she was only 16 years old, while socializing with friends on a night out.
Tulisa courageously shared with Paul that there was a time when she pleaded with her friend to avoid drugging her, having noticed bubbles in his drink, and then went on to describe the events leading up to her alleged attack.
She shared with Paul, ‘I was hanging out with a bunch of guys, acquaintances from my neighborhood, some I’d known for quite a while. We were friends, and one of them had something bubbling in his drink that made me exclaim, “Oh dear!” instantly.’
They’re using illegal substances. What are you planning to add into mine? And I glanced at him, feeling anxious, pleading, “For the love of goodness, don’t put anything in my drink.” (Informal)
Later on, The Young star reminisced about the moment she became alarmed after being drugged, due to her highly responsive nature towards substances. She went on to say, ‘I reacted strongly because at that point, I had started experiencing seizures from mere marijuana use.’
‘So I was like, “I can’t take any drug. Like, please, please don’t put any drugs in my drink”. Like, and he was like, “no, no”.’
Later, Tulisa recounted that she passed out before the attack occurred, yet she distinctly recalled glimpses of brightness as she was transported in the back of a vehicle.
She said: ‘I remembered feeling like, what is going on? And then next thing, you know, I just remember flashes of being in a car and just seeing the lights, the street lights.”
‘It seems like I was lying back, and for a brief moment, I opened my eyes, catching glimpses of street lights. After that, it’s clear that I must have woken up in a room, and from there on, the events that followed are what we now refer to as history.’
Later on, Tulisa shared that the mother of her assailant served her tea the following morning, unaware that her son had committed a sexual assault against Tulisa the previous day.
The artist additionally verified that she hadn’t affirmed the attack at the time, and later, Paul asked whether she would have reported it if given the opportunity to do so in the past.
Instead, Tulisa conceded that her initial response might have involved retaliation against him, which could have hindered her ability to report the incident.
She stated: “In all likelihood, I would have retaliated against him, which means I wouldn’t have been in a position to report the incident honestly. Likely, I would have administered severe punishment, and the thought of reporting it was unappealing because I would have faced consequences for my actions.
In the conversation, Tulisa firmly stated that she wouldn’t change a thing about the past and explicitly held the perpetrator accountable for the incident.
‘When I feel hurt or cornered, I often blame myself instead of considering other options. I blamed him entirely and didn’t consider how I could have acted differently. That was all on him.’
Following my time on I’m A Celebrity, I’ve decided to share some difficult experiences from my past that I’ve kept hidden until now.
This month, the singer drew attention by leaving Australia ahead of the final show, choosing to stay out of the spotlight following her elimination as the third celebrity voted off the jungle.
Regarding her departure, she shared with The Guardian: ‘Being in the public eye after coming out, surrounded by cameras, left me feeling overwhelmed as an introvert. The constant attention caused me to hyperventilate and cry; it was simply too much for me.’
She mentioned that it was unclear if the ‘anxiety’ stemmed from being under the limelight or if it was due to a loss of interest in stardom.
It’s no surprise that Tulisa prefers to keep a low profile, given her history of getting caught up in various controversies, such as the high-profile drug scandal orchestrated by The Sun’s Fake Sheikh.
However, she disclosed that the sex tape Justin Edwards shared publicly in 2012 was the event that caused her the greatest distress. Subsequently, she filed a lawsuit against him for distributing the video, and they reached an agreement in court.
In her own words, Tulisa described her trauma as having the deepest and longest lasting impacts. She explained that this experience significantly influenced her romantic relationships and intimate connections. Furthermore, she expressed a profound sense of embarrassment associated with it, which has altered her perspective on sex.
In the heart of the jungle, Tulisa shared insights into her personal life, disclosing that she’s abstained from intimate relationships for a span of three years and identifying herself as demisexual.
Demisexuality refers to a type of sexual orientation, where an individual feels sexual attraction solely after developing a deep emotional bond with another person.
In her own words, Tulisa expressed that she had always been inclined to be this way, but the type of person she is combined with the experiences she’s encountered, pushed her even further into her protective shell.
I prefer interacting with individuals who are familiar to me. For the last decade, I’ve been dating people I’ve known before. When it comes to meeting someone new, unfortunately, my chances of giving them a shot are slim.
She also mentioned that if she doesn’t view someone as a ‘friend’, then they wouldn’t be someone she’d consider as a romantic partner. Simply put, they wouldn’t stir those special feelings within her.
Yet she revealed that she doesn’t think her celibacy will last forever as she has faith that the universe will provide her with the perfect person.
