Bruce Springsteen, a well-known supporter of liberal causes, headlined a No Kings rally in Minneapolis-St. Paul on Saturday, as similar events were held in cities nationwide.
The gatherings were organized to protest policies of the Trump administration, such as the ICE raids and the conflict with Iran.
At the beginning of the year, Minneapolis saw a lot of protests against ICE. These protests grew more intense after federal law enforcement officers killed two demonstrators, Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
Bruce Springsteen, a dedicated Democrat who performed at Joe Biden’s inauguration and has often spoken out against Donald Trump, released a song called “Streets of Minneapolis” in January as a response to the violence that occurred there.
He sang the song this Saturday at a rally held at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul, one of the two cities – along with Minneapolis – known as the ‘Twin Cities’.
During the past winter, federal troops caused fear and violence in Minneapolis, a city Bruce Springsteen declared they had miscalculated targeting, as he stated from the stage.
Springsteen said the people of Minneapolis and Minnesota showed incredible strength and unity, inspiring the whole nation and reminding everyone what America can be, as he shared during the No Kings livestream.
Jane Fonda, the 88-year-old actress and longtime activist, was also present. She’s balanced a successful movie career with over fifty years of progressive political work.
She said she wouldn’t give a speech because they were behind schedule and many people needed to catch their flights.
Instead, she read a statement from Renee Good’s partner, Becca Good, who many people called her wife, though they weren’t legally married.
When Renee was fatally shot, Becca was a passenger in her Honda Pilot and shouted, ‘Drive, baby, drive!’ Renee then sped forward, but her vehicle was surrounded by ICE agents, and one of them fired the shot that killed her.
“I’m just devastated,” Becca shared in a statement read by Fonda. “I deeply miss my wife. Everyone now sees how bright and kind she was – truly one of a kind. We’ve lost someone amazing.”
During her speech, Fonda briefly raised a clenched fist, then went on to introduce singer Maggie Rogers.
Thirty-one-year-old Rogers performed with the iconic folk singer Joan Baez, 85, and guitarist Tom Morello, 64.
Throughout his career, Tom Morello has performed with iconic bands like Rage Against the Machine and as a touring member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.
I was at the No Kings rally at the State Capitol on Saturday, and it was incredible! Rogers, Baez, and Morello actually played Bob Dylan’s ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ – it was a really powerful moment.
Joan Baez mistakenly remembered singing a different song at the 1963 March on Washington. She actually performed “We Shall Overcome” at the event.
The No Kings protest in New York City drew high-profile attendees, including Padma Lakshmi, who spoke to the press during the event.
Actor Robert De Niro, who has long been critical of the Trump administration, was seen wearing an ‘I Love NY’ pin while marching in Manhattan.
In Los Angeles, protestors included comedian Kathy Griffin, who recently said she’s no longer facing career repercussions from a 2017 controversy. The controversy stemmed from a photo where she held a prop resembling Donald Trump’s severed head.
As a comedian, I believe in using my platform to speak out, and recently I was part of a protest carrying a sign that made a clear statement. One side called out ICE, labeling them ‘Trump’s lawless militia,’ and the other side demanded justice for Pretti and Good – a call for accountability in their case. It’s about using humor and visibility to highlight issues I care deeply about.
Annette Bening participated in a protest in Studio City, standing with other demonstrators and holding a sign featuring a picture of Mary Poppins.
The sign displayed a playful phrase – ‘Super Callous Fragile Nihilistic Extra Halitosis’ – and was clearly intended to be sung using the same melody as ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’.
Edward James Olmos, known for his roles in films like Blade Runner and popular TV series such as Miami Vice and Battlestar Galactica, was also at Studio City.
