True Detective creator teases Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey return: “I actually have another story”
Creator of True Detective, Nic Pizzolatto, hinted that actors Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey might return to their characters from the show.
In 2014, the duo joined forces for the first season of HBO’s crime anthology drama. Their roles were as Louisiana State Police homicide detectives, tasked with solving a series of murders that spanned almost two decades in an eight-part series.
More than ten years after it initially aired, the show’s debut season continues to be celebrated as one of the most exceptional TV productions in recent times. Regrettably, the following three seasons of the series have not received the same level of praise as the initial narrative.

Pizzolatto, previously responsible as both showrunner and screenwriter for the first three seasons, revealed on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast that he has a concept for a story involving Marty Hart (played by Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (portrayed by McConaughey). He mentioned that the actors are supportive of this idea.
As a storyteller, here’s a thought I’ve been mulling over for Cohle and Hart: a tale yet untold that might see the light of day someday. It’s deeply rooted in character development, an idea that’s been brewing in my mind, unwritten so far.
The writer, previously dismissed as showrunner for the fourth season of Night Country, expressed that there have been discussions about reuniting and moving forward. He believes the cast is amenable to this idea. However, it’s uncertain whether this reunion will actually occur or not.
In a chat with Variety, McConaughey himself expressed his affection for the series, stating: “Of all the seasons, I’d venture to say that my favorite – and I believe this impartially – is Season 1. I was part of it, and I found it to be exceptional television and a fantastic series.
Every Sunday evening, I’d eagerly tune in, just like everyone else, and let me tell you, it was a spectacle I looked forward to. The anticipation was palpable, and as the opening credits rolled, I’d sink into my chair, ready to immerse myself in the world on screen.
The excitement didn’t end with the show, though. Monday mornings at work were filled with discussions about the previous night’s events, akin to trading tales from a gaming session. Despite having been part of its creation, there were still moments that took me by surprise, leaving me eagerly waiting for what would happen next. It was one of those unforgettable experiences in television history.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed if Harrelson and McConaughey will replay their detective characters, they’re joining forces again for the Apple TV+’s comedy series called Brothers, where they portray fictionalized versions of themselves.
The inaugural print issue of Digital Spy’s magazine, titled “British Comedy Legends,” is now available! You can purchase it from your local newsagents or online for only £3.99.
