The new Tron film, Tron: Ares, will be available on Disney+ at the beginning of next year. Directed by Joachim Rønning and featuring Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters, it’s the third movie in the Tron series. The original Tron came out in 1982, and its sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released almost thirty years later in December 2010. Although the latest film didn’t perform well in theaters, Disney is hoping it will find an audience on their streaming service.
Disney+ will begin streaming Tron: Ares on January 7, 2026, just 89 days after it hits theaters on October 10. Fans can also purchase the movie on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD starting January 6, 2026 – one day before the streaming release. The film stars Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minaj, Arturo Castro, and Jeff Bridges, who is returning as his iconic character, Kevin Flynn, from previous Tron films.

Disney’s Tron: Ares was a major financial disappointment, performing even worse than their earlier 2025 release, Snow White. Despite a production cost estimated between $180 and $220 million, the film only earned $73.2 million in the US and $142 million worldwide. Its opening weekend brought in $35 million, falling short of expectations and less than the $44 million earned by Tron: Legacy fifteen years earlier. Critics gave the film mixed reviews (54% on Rotten Tomatoes), and fans of Tron: Legacy generally didn’t enjoy it.
Even though Tron: Ares didn’t do well in theaters, the studio waited almost three months before adding it to Disney+. This is a common practice for films that underperform, as seen with Elio (available on Disney+ after 89 days) and Snow White (82 days). Ares became available to buy digitally in December, 53 days after its release, by which point it was mostly no longer showing in cinemas.

After the third attempt to revive Tron as a major sci-fi series failed, the future of the franchise looks uncertain. While both previous Tron movies underperformed in theaters but later gained popularity on home video, there’s hope Tron: Ares might find a similar audience on Disney+. It’s possible Disney could revisit the series again in another fifteen or twenty years with a fourth installment.
