Well, things are looking pretty grim for . It didn’t do well in theaters, and now I’m hearing Disney could lose around $135 million on this sci-fi sequel. It’s a really tough break, and honestly, a bit shocking to see such a significant loss.
Disney’s *Tron: Ares* is projected to lose around $132.7 million. This calculation comes after it was revealed the film’s actual budget was $220 million – about $40 million more than originally reported. The film had a disappointing opening weekend and earned just $11.1 million during its second weekend. With ticket sales declining rapidly, *Ares* is expected to finish with a total of around $160 million, significantly less than the $410 million earned by *Tron: Legacy* in 2010.
How Will Tron: Ares Lose Disney Over $100 Million?
Deadline estimates that *Tron: Ares* will lose $132.7 million. This calculation is based on projected revenues of $214.8 million versus total costs of $347.5 million. While the film is expected to earn around $160 million in theaters, studios also make money from other sources like home entertainment and television. Disney anticipates $72.2 million from worldwide theatrical rentals, $37.6 million from global home entertainment, nearly $100 million from global television rights, and $5 million from airlines, totaling $214.8 million. However, Disney heavily invested in marketing and prints for *Ares*, spending $102.5 million. When added to the $220 million production budget, $10.8 million in other expenses, and $14.2 million in residuals, the total cost reaches $347.5 million.
Released in 2010, *Tron: Legacy* did reasonably well at the box office, earning $410 million and bringing the *Tron* franchise back to life. However, Disney was slow to move forward with a sequel. A planned *Tron 3* was canceled in 2015, just before filming was scheduled to start. That sequel would have continued the story of *Legacy*, with Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and director Joseph Kosinski returning. Instead, Disney reimagined the third film as *Tron: Ares*, starring Jared Leto in the lead role.
It doesn’t look like a new *Tron* movie will be made for a while, despite the last film hinting at a sequel that would have brought back characters from the original *Tron* and *Legacy*. It’s disappointing Disney hasn’t been able to successfully launch *Tron* as a major film franchise, especially since the *Tronthemed ride at its parks is incredibly popular.
Tron: Ares is available in theaters, while Tron and Tron: Legacy can be streamed on Disney+.
