Tron: Ares star Jared Leto has explained the lengthy development process and how it impacted the release of the highly awaited sequel in theaters.
I’m so excited for the new Tron movie! It’s the third film in the franchise and comes out on October 10th. From what I’ve read, it centers around this incredibly advanced Program named Ares (played by Leto). The official story says he’s sent from the digital world into our world on a really risky mission. Apparently, it’s the first time humans will actually meet a true AI, which sounds amazing and a little scary!
The movie was first revealed in 2017 and it took nearly 10 years to finally reach theaters. However, the main actor, Leto, believes that even with the lengthy delay, the film remains important and relatable.
What to Read Next
He explained to Digital Spy at the film’s London premiere that the timing of the release feels right, given how much everyone is currently discussing AI. He shared that they began working on the movie around nine or ten years ago, and at that time, AI wasn’t a common topic of conversation except among specialists like researchers and academics.
These days, it seems like everyone is discussing and utilizing this technology, even if they aren’t fully aware of it; it’s become integrated into our daily routines. Therefore, I find it particularly noteworthy that the film is being released now.

Leto drew a comparison between the third film and the original Tron, released in 1982. Back then, just like now, “people were discussing computers and video games” as these technologies were becoming popular.
The star added that they felt fortunate the topic connects with a discussion everyone is already engaged in.
This film is a large-scale, enjoyable adventure packed with thrills, emotion, and comedy, and of course, Jeff Bridges. It’s genuinely a lot of fun, and I hope audiences experience the same joy I felt as a child watching it in the theater back in 1982.
Leto’s fellow actor, Jodie Turner-Smith, mentioned that the people working on the film discussed artificial intelligence when they started shooting. “We filmed this about a year and a half ago, and somehow they predicted things that would happen in a remarkably accurate way,” she said.

We were discussing AI in a way we hadn’t when the film was first made – Jared’s been working on this for almost ten years now – but they successfully positioned the film within a continuing and important discussion, and that’s really remarkable.
We haven’t figured out all the answers regarding AI and its impact on the world, but we’re actively exploring these challenges. We’re inviting others to join us in considering the ethical implications and ensuring that AI remains focused on human needs and values. We are currently in a phase of exploration and questioning, rather than having definitive solutions, and we want to tackle this with a collaborative approach. Ethical considerations are at the forefront of this process.
Smith believes things don’t need to be negative, suggesting that if people use AI to make the world a better place, positive outcomes are possible. He stated, “it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom” if we can change the world for the better.
What if this technology fell into the wrong hands-someone without a moral compass, like the character Julian Dillinger, brilliantly portrayed by Evan Peters? It’s a fantastic, relevant, and important story for today’s world.

Lee reflected that a great deal had changed every day since filming for Tron: Ares began a year and a half ago, and he said it was an “honour” to finally share the movie with viewers.
“I think it’s an honour for us to get to share a movie that is so timely and is touching on such contemporary themes and asking the question, how can we ensure that this tech and all of these innovations can offer up some good and how can we make sure that it’s human-centric.”
In addition to Joaquin Phoenix (as Leto) and Will Smith, the movie features performances by Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Jeff Bridges, and Cameron Monaghan.
Tron: Ares is released in UK cinemas on October 10.
