‘Troll 2’ Is a Streaming Success on Nexflix

A follow-up to one of the biggest movies of 2022 has just been released, and it quickly became the most popular title on Netflix worldwide, even though some are calling it a letdown compared to the original. It’s a surprising hit during a time when feel-good, holiday-themed movies usually dominate the streaming charts. But apparently, nothing says Christmas quite like a huge monster from Norway attacking people!

The 2022 Netflix film Troll became a surprise success, telling the story of an enormous, ancient troll who awakens after centuries to cause destruction. It quickly became one of the most-watched non-English language movies on the platform, leading to the development of a sequel. Now, Troll 2 is proving just as popular with viewers as the original.

While the original Troll received a respectable 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel Troll 2 only managed a 58% score. Audience reactions have been similarly harsh, mirroring the criticism the first film received three years prior. The original Troll has a 50% audience score, and the sequel is likely to struggle to reach even that level given the overwhelmingly negative reviews. If you can overlook the less-than-perfect special effects and a somewhat illogical storyline, Troll 2 might be an enjoyable way to pass about 90 minutes.

Okay, so this movie definitely delivers on the spectacle – think big, explosive action! I recently read an interview with the director, Roar Uthang, in SciFi Now, and he said he really looked to those classic action films from years ago for inspiration. It’s clear he paid attention – the movie feels like a throwback in the best way, while still being totally modern.

I had probably seen disaster movies like the Roland Emmerich Godzilla film, or movies like Armageddon and Independence Day. It made me wonder how we could create a similar story set in Norway. Then I found an old drawing by a Norwegian artist named Kittelsen – he often drew trolls – and it showed a troll walking down the main street of Oslo. I started thinking about what would happen if that actually happened today, and how the government and military would respond.

Will We Get to See ‘Troll 3’ After Latest Netflix Success?

Netflix

The director of Troll 2 is back to make another monster movie, and he’s open to directing a third one if the opportunity arises. He shared this during a recent interview, stating:

I’m really interested in developing the world of the Trolls movies further. We might even be able to create a whole series of films – a ‘troll-ogy,’ if you will. We’re still exploring the possibilities and will see what happens.

Netflix doesn’t pay much attention to reviews if a movie becomes hugely popular and stays at number one. If Troll 2 remains the most-watched film, even with new Christmas releases competing, a sequel might actually happen.
