As a seasoned journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen many a feud unfold between celebrities and talk show hosts. However, the spat between Meg Ryan and Michael Parkinson is one that stands out for its intensity and longevity.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share a fascinating tidbit: Trinny Woodall disclosed an intriguing detail about Michael Parkinson. Apparently, during their notoriously frosty interview in 2003, he allegedly referred to Meg Ryan using a less than flattering term!

60-year-old star of What Not To Wear, joined by her co-host Susannah Constantine, graced an episode of the Parkinson’s talk show prior to Meg being interviewed.

The duo served as the opening performers for Parkinson’s conversation with Actress Meg. However, her responses to his questions were extremely brief, leading to a fiery disagreement that concluded their interaction.

On the Dish podcast from Waitrose, hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, Trinny revealed the true feelings of the late broadcaster following their tumultuous interview.

She recollected something quite vividly, adding that her thoughts were with Mr. Parkinson, she said. “We started off together, and then she joined us…When we departed, he leaned close to me and murmured, ‘Goodness gracious, wasn’t she a gem?’

Michael passed away in August 2023 at the age of 88 following a brief illness.

After reflecting on the interview, Trinny stated, ‘It was as if he expected more because she was there primarily… She had come to publicize her movie, and he posed any question. You realize you’re essentially performing for your compensation when promoting a film, especially considering the millions she’s being paid, not to mention the £12.99 people are spending to watch her. Therefore, one might say, provide us with something of value.’

After completing the interview, they introduced the headliner, as we were merely the opening act. This often allows for additional time, giving us a chance to ask an extra question or two.

Trinny mentioned, “Michael seemed very anxious, so we posed several questions…just to lighten up the tense situation a bit…

In 2003, Meg provided brief responses during an interview about her movie “In the Cut,” which was featured on Sir Michael Parkinson’s BBC chat program.

The Hollywood actress seemingly desired to be elsewhere while promoting her film ‘In the Cut’.

In the frosty conversation, Michael inquired whether her caution towards reporters offered her understanding of their desires. Ryan countered with a hint of defense: “With my current vigilance, do I now understand them?

Michael replied: “Yes, it seems you have apprehensions towards journalists, toward me personally, and this interview itself. It appears you aren’t fond of being questioned.

Later on, he questioned, “What would you do if you were in my shoes right now?” To this, Meg instructed him to simply finish the task at hand.

Michael branded ‘beautiful Meg’ as an ‘unhappy woman’, while she hit back labelling him a ‘nut’.

Additionally, he later asserted during an interview with Australia’s Stellar Magazine that she displayed rudeness towards guests on his program.

The longtime host attributed Ryan’s tense demeanor on the show to his movie’s underwhelming box office success.

In 2020, Michael explained: “She had a compelling reason to return home. She had been in a movie that didn’t perform as expected, and she had just finished a lengthy tour, eagerly looking forward to getting back.

However, in an interview with Marie Claire, Harry from When Harry Met Sally attributed the chilly conversation to Michael.

She stated that she felt Michael was criticising her for being nude in the movie, saying that she was ‘so offended by him’.

Back in 2006, I found myself utterly baffled. That fellow seemed more like a stern dad who didn’t approve of me rather than the man I’d been idolizing! It’s mind-boggling, really. To my fellow fans, he might be something special, but to me, he was nothing short of nuts!

He implied, “Perhaps it’s time for you to return to your previous activities.” This made me think, “Do you act as if you’re scolding a child? Keep your advice to yourself.” I felt quite upset by this.

Years later, Michael was questioned about what interview he would re-do given the chance.

The broadcasting juggernaut told Good Morning Britain: ‘I would like to get the Meg Ryan one right. I mean we were both in a fairly grim mood I think.

‘There was another way to handle that and extract more fun from it.’
