Trick Williams’ story feels scattered in NXT
As a die-hard NXT fan with over two decades of wrestling fandom under my belt, I must say I’m finding myself a bit disheartened lately. It’s not that the roster isn’t impressive – it is! But it seems like one of their shining stars, Trick Williams, is struggling to find his footing in the storylines.
NXT boasts an outstanding lineup that truly deserves recognition. They’ve got agile acrobats, powerful heavyweights, charming titleholders, and impressive female performers – not to mention PLEs that make ticket purchasing a no-brainer! With TNA planning a crossover event, it seems NXT is poised for even greater success.
It appears that the previous titleholder, Trick Williams, struggles to adhere to a compelling narrative following his defeat at NXT Heatwave. His world championship was taken by Ethan Page, though this win was more of a surprise than deserved due to the circumstances. Despite Ethan being in the limelight now, Trick remains an attractive figure for fans who treat him like a modern-day John Cena from NXT. It would be unwise not to incorporate him into a captivating storyline.
However, over the past three weeks, Trick has been traversing different narrative landscapes rather than sticking to one storyline. In his first week, he teamed up with Joe Hendry against Sean Spears and Ethan Page. That match primarily showcased Hendry’s skills, leaving Trick in a supporting role. The following week, Trick faced off against Cedric Alexander, but their match ended prematurely due to an ambush by Pete Dunne. Subsequently, at The Great American Bash, Trick was defeated by Pete Dunne.
During the matches, Trick boasted boldly that he would regain the championship no matter what. He was firm in his belief, but his performances indicated a lack of a compelling narrative. Initially, he was resentful towards Shawn and Ethan, then turned his anger on Cedric Alexander. In the end, he was defeated by Pete, who had no connection to Trick’s storyline.
Without a clear route to any championship, wrestler Wes Lee is seeing improved storylines thanks to his association with The Rascalz. Even Lexis King’s previously weak feud with a music disc jockey is garnering more attention now.
As a gamer, I’ve been following NXT closely, and if there’s a promising future for Trick in the league, it’s not quite evident in his matches yet. If they’re weaving a grand narrative with a slow build-up, it sometimes feels disjointed. If they’re planning to promote him to Raw or SmackDown, now could be the perfect moment to start phasing him out from NXT, setting the stage for his next big move.
NXT seems to be in a holding pattern, as if it’s biding its time until the perfect moment to share the significant stories. Ethan Page appears to be filling in for the title, while the women’s tag team matches seem to be leading to brief feuds that don’t develop fully. The scheduling is reminiscent of a local show.
NXT might ideally represent a vibrant, novel brand, distinctly its own world. Imagine it as the lively and enthusiastic group at Thanksgiving gatherings. However, one may wonder, for how long shall we anticipate something captivating?
