The renowned film director David Lynch, best known for his Academy Award-nominated work that blended surrealism into popular culture through ‘Twin Peaks’ and ‘Mulholland Drive,’ passed away at the age of 78.

MacLachlan posted an extended, heartfelt tribute to Lynch on Instagram.

Forty-two years ago, David Lynch mysteriously chose me from obscurity to headline his only large-scale production film. There was a talent within me that he seemed to intuitively understand, and it has been this vision of his that has shaped my entire career and life. To me, he was an elusive and intuitive individual with a deep wellspring of creativity flowing from within him. He tapped into something that many of us can only dream of reaching.

Our friendship flourished through shared experiences like ‘Blue Velvet’ and ‘Twin Peaks’, and I’ve always regarded him as one of the most genuinely vibrant individuals I’ve encountered. David seemed to be in harmony with the cosmos and his creative mind in a way that felt like an ideal embodiment of humanity. He didn’t seek answers because he grasped that questions are what propel us, they are our life force, they define who we are.

Although the world has bid farewell to an extraordinary creative soul, I’ve lost someone very dear who not only painted beautiful pictures but also painted a vivid future for me, enabling me to explore realms that would have remained hidden if left to my own imagination. In my mind’s eye, I can still see him standing tall in his backyard, ready to welcome me with a radiant smile, a hearty embrace, and that distinctive voice echoing the Great Plains. We shared stories of coffee, the thrill of surprises, the enchantment of nature, and laughter.

Our love for each other was destined by the universe to be, as we found the finest qualities in one another. I will grieve him more deeply than words can express or my heart can handle. My life has been richer because of his presence and poorer now that he’s absent. David, you have left an indelible mark on me, and I remain forever yours, Kale. Thank you for everything.

In 2001, Naomi Watts featured prominently in David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive,” a project that initially started as an unfinished TV series but was later transformed into a critically acclaimed movie. This film even garnered Lynch an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Additionally, Watts made an appearance during the third season of “Twin Peaks.

As a movie enthusiast, let me share my own take: “I’m crushed. My friend Dave is gone. The world feels differently now without him. His guiding influence in creativity was extraordinary. He was the one who propelled me into the limelight when I had been struggling for over a decade, repeatedly failing auditions. Then, one day, I found myself before an enigmatic man, radiating warmth and wisdom, speaking words that seemed to come from another time, making me laugh and feel at ease. It’s still hard to believe he saw something in me when I was so lost, even when I had lost sight of myself.

Beyond affecting me through his artwork alone, his wisdom, wit, and affection instilled within me an unprecedented self-belief that I had never tapped into before.

In every instant we spent together, there was an energy I seldom encounter or recognize. This might be due to the fact that he seemed to inhabit a realm distinct from the ordinary, one that I feel incredibly fortunate to have had even a small connection with. David’s ability to share this extraordinary world through his exceptional storytelling not only raised the bar for cinema but also served as an inspiration for filmmakers worldwide.

I’m utterly astonished that he has left us. I find myself shattered yet eternally thankful for our friendship.

From the rooftops, I call out: Farewell, Dear Dave! Thank you for everything.

In 1990, Nicholas Cage featured in David Lynch’s movie titled “Wild at Heart.” This film was honored with the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Diane Ladd earned an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role.

In a statement, Cage expressed that David was an extraordinary genius in the realm of cinema, ranking among the greatest artists, regardless of era. He was fearless, intelligent, and a trailblazer with an infectious sense of humor. I can honestly say that I’ve never had more fun on a film set than working alongside David Lynch. His memory will forever be precious, like solid gold.

As a passionate cinephile, I found myself in awe when Steven Spielberg chose David Lynch to portray the legendary John Ford in his 2022 autobiographical film, “The Fabelmans.” In his own words, Spielberg shared, “I’ve always admired David’s films. ‘Blue Velvet,’ ‘Mulholland Drive,’ and ‘Elephant Man’ showcased him as a unique visionary with a dreamer’s touch, crafting films that felt like works of art. It was a surreal experience for me to work with someone whose heroes I shared – David Lynch playing John Ford in ‘The Fabelmans.’ It felt like a scene straight out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss the originality and singularity of his voice. His films have proven timeless, and they will continue to inspire generations to come.

Movie director Harmony Korine, known for films like “Gummo” and “Trash Humpers,” which share a surreal, Lynch-like portrayal of America, likewise paid tribute to the filmmaker through a statement.

Director Harmony Korine praised David Lynch, stating he was one of the greatest artists, a cinematic titan even comparable to Mount Rushmore figures. In simpler terms, he was an outstanding artist in his field. Lynch’s impact on people’s lives was profound, and no other individual will ever fill his unique place, as he made films during a period when nothing similar had been produced before. Today, we live in an era of constant exposure, but Lynch pioneered a new cinematic language. He was a rare talent of his generation who tapped into America’s wild spirit and expressed it through his own internal logic and subconscious magic. His creations were worlds apart, offering unparalleled vibrations that touched on the mysterious, ineffable, and indescribable. In essence, Lynch is a treasure whose work will continue to endure for generations.

2010 saw French actress Marion Cotillard feature in a short film titled “Lady Blue Shanghai,” directed by David Lynch, who worked on it for the luxury fashion brand Dior. Sharing her feelings on Instagram, Cotillard expressed, “I’m heartbroken but grateful that our paths crossed and I had the privilege of being filmed by you. Spending time with you felt like connecting to a profound place of heart and soul. Wishing you a wonderful journey, David.

David Lynch graduated from the American Film Institute in 1970. A statement from the AFI said, “Throughout the years, David left an indelible mark on cinema with his unique films and art, and he consistently gave back to AFI by supporting the next generation of storytellers who dared to break the mold and strive for something original. During a workshop on campus, he imparted this enduring advice to fellow students: ‘Share the stories that resonate within you. Everyone has their own unique tales waiting to be told. Simply remain faithful to those concepts and enjoy the process of bringing them to life.’

Richard Kelly, renowned for crafting enigmatic realms in movies like “Donnie Darko,” made a straightforward statement expressing admiration: “One could argue that he was one of the greatest artists to have ever existed.

In a tribute similar to Jane Schoenbrun’s words, “I Saw the TV Glow,” she honored David Lynch by saying, “Much like Kafka and Bacon, he dedicated his life to creating a gateway. He was the one who first showed me another world, a stunning realm of love and danger that I only sensed during sleep but had never seen elsewhere. Thank you, David, for the gift you’ve given me, its echo will continue resonating throughout my lifetime.
