Tributes flow as respected Channel Ten reporter dies aged 58: ‘Fate is beyond cruel’

Tim Stoney has died at the age of 58 after a battle with cancer.

A well-known journalist with a 30-year career at Channel Ten and the ABC died peacefully on Saturday, surrounded by his family.

He is remembered by his wife, Mary Gearin, also a journalist, and their children, Maggie and Patrick.

Before he passed away, Gearin shared a touching Facebook post honoring her husband.

‘I’m not on socials much anymore but I figure it comes in handy right now as a virtual party for this man, Tim Stoney,’ she began.

He was an amazing father – the best his children could have hoped for. He selflessly supported my adventures, and as a result, his children grew into wonderful people.

Someone who enjoys language, clever conversation, lively discussions, exploring new places, learning about the past, following current events, watching sports, listening to jazz music, and savoring a good whiskey.

‘Fiercely loyal family member and friend.

He’s a journalist, writer, and teacher, also skilled in media training. Beyond that, he’s been an athlete – a ruckman for the Demons football club and a fast bowler for St Kilda cricket club, and he’s a capable batsman. Most importantly, he’s a very dedicated father who supports his kids in basketball and athletics.

‘And just always, always, ridiculously good-looking.

We’re facing the heartbreaking possibility of losing a truly special person very soon, and it’s going to leave a huge void in our lives. This post is a celebration of him and all the joy he brings while we still have him.

‘Love you forever Timmy.’

Tim carved out his career covering news and sports at Channel Ten for three years.

He moved to Melbourne and worked as a news and sports reporter for SBS World News Australia for four years.

Tim also put in a five-year stint working at the ABC before landing a role with Radio Australia.

Kate McGrath, who used to work with Tim Stoney at Channel Ten, also paid tribute, telling Adelaide Now that he was a truly special person.

Kate described him as a talented journalist and communicator who was kind, inquisitive, and funny. He was deeply passionate about both sports and history, and, she added, he was strikingly handsome.

‘Above all else, Tim loved his family, especially Mary and his two children.

‘I know his Ten News family all feel a great loss.’
