Trespasses is Channel 4's newest book-to-screen adaptation

As a literature enthusiast with a soft spot for historical fiction and a deep appreciation for the complexities of human relationships, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming adaptation of Louise Kennedy’s “Trespasses.” Having lived through the tumultuous times depicted in the novel myself, albeit from a different corner of the emerald isle, I find the narrative both poignant and painfully relevant.

A captivating adaptation of Louise Kennedy’s top-selling book, “Trespasses,” is making its way to Channel 4. It offers a tantalizing blend of forbidden love, the tumultuous era of The Troubles in Ireland, and an exceptionally talented ensemble cast. What more could one ask for?

The narrative unfolds around Cushla, a young lady residing with her mother in the quaint town of Belfast. She serves dual roles as a school teacher and an active member at the family-owned pub. It’s within this pub that she encounters Michael, a seasoned lawyer known for his courtroom defense of IRA members. The connection between them is swiftly formed, as Cushla finds herself smitten almost instantly.

However, there’s a significant condition: Michael is significantly older, a Protestant (a crucial factor in those times, especially for a Catholic like Cushla), and he’s married. Cushla carries on the relationship until one day, a father of one of her students nearly gets brutally attacked. This incident sets off a chain reaction that would dramatically alter Cushla’s life and force her to reconsider her principles and beliefs.

The book made its debut in April 2022, and it has been nominated for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, a highly esteemed literary honor in Britain. The title of this work, as well as the series, seems to revolve around religious themes and the divided state of Ireland during that period. It promises to be engaging to observe how they represent it.

Gillian Anderson and Tom Cullen to star in Trespasses

The series will star Gillian Anderson as Cushla’s mom, Gina, and Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey) as Michael. Lola Pettigrew (Bloodlands) will play the role of Cushla. Screenwriter Ailbhe Keoghan (Bad Sisters) adapted Kennedy’s book for the screen, and the four-part mini-series will be directed by Dawn Shadworth, who most recently directed three episodes of Apple TV+’s Apples Never Fall. The mini-series likely won’t air until next year as filming doesn’t start until the fall.

Gillian Anderson expressed that she felt an instant connection to the character Gina, found in the book and script, and was eager to accept Louise’s invitation to portray her. Reading Ailbhe’s exceptional scripts further convinced her of its potential for screen adaptation, especially with Dawn as director and Lola and Tom alongside. She is thrilled to be joining the Trespasses team.
