Travis Fimmel and his Dune: Prophecy costars break down last night's climactic scene

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for epic storytelling and intricate narratives, I must say that the latest episode of Dune: Prophecy left me utterly captivated. The climactic scene at the Landsraad meeting was nothing short of mesmerizing, filled with tension, betrayal, and unexpected twists that had me on the edge of my seat.

In the most recent installment of “Dune: Prophecy,” titled “Twice Born,” reaches its peak during a gathering of the Landsraad, the influential coalition responsible for shaping the Imperium’s course. The events unfold in an unexpected manner. Desmond Hart (portrayed by Travis Fimmel), now acting as Emperor Corrino’s (Mark Strong) enforcer, publicly employs his incineration abilities to carry out justice against individuals who violated the sacred law banning thinking machines. This chilling demonstration of power serves as a stern warning to the great houses, making them think long and hard before challenging the emperor.

In addition to thwarting a dangerous bombing scheme orchestrated by a band of rebels, which included House Corrino’s personal swordmaster Kieran Atreides (Chris Mason), Desmond also witnesses the emperor’s daughter Inez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) confront her father in a public setting. This confrontation stems from his alleged involvement in the death of her former fiancĂ©, Pruitt Richese, who perished in the series premiere. However, she hoped for support from her half-brother Constantine (Josh Heuston), but he ultimately failed to stand by her side.

It all added up to a really entertaining sequence. Before the series began airing, we got to talk to the cast of Dune: Prophecy alongside other journalists, and of course we had to ask about this scene. We started with Travis Fimmel, who relished the opportunity to have a big speech. “It’s his moment where he’s got the floor and he’s gotta sell,” Fimmel told us. “So he’s gotta take advantage of his audience right there and then he’s gotta have a lot of conviction. And you want people to enjoy his presence or be intimidated by him or scared of him. It was his moment to really sell his idea and what he believes in, and a lot of truth-saying in front of people that have been lying. The whole scene to me is a lot about calling out the lies in front of everybody. It has to be very honest room after he does his little speech.”

Executive producer Jordan Goldberg added his thoughts: “Having been present and seen it unfold, I can say those were among the best days we filmed. Travis delivered that monologue numerous times, but each take was spot-on, brilliant, and really established the atmosphere for the set. It was an enjoyable scene to work on.

We interview the Dune: Prophecy cast about the climactic events of Episode 4

During our conversation, we had the opportunity to discuss the mental states of characters Inez, Constantine, and Kieran Atreides as they approached a significant turning point. Sarah-Sofie Boussnina explained that Princess Ynez was anticipating a different outcome than what ultimately transpired. She believed her brother, Constantine, would arrive to aid her in awakening their father. This was their last chance and the optimal strategy was to do it in front of all the great houses so they could remove Desmond Hart from power. However, Constantine didn’t show up, which was a significant blow as it was the first time he had let her down. Despite this setback, Ynez remained steadfast in her beliefs and decided to go through with what she thought was right. This resolute determination is characteristic of Ynez, and so she entered the situation feeling quite confident that she would expose Desmond’s wrongdoings in front of all the houses. The scene then unfolds where Desmond descends the steps past Inez, and there is a moment when their eyes meet, and Inez feels a sense of triumph, believing she had caught him.

But then he flips it and reveals the rebellion [plot] that he has found and just flips the whole plan around, and that shocks Inez so much. Because she knows that, ‘Okay, I’m not in a good position right now. I have called my family out in front of all the great houses and I have nothing now because he flipped it. You know, it’s kind of like a point of no return for her, I think…I also think Inez…keeps hoping that her dad will tell Desmond to stop, and [him] using his powers to kill all these people is a huge defeat for her and their relationship.

After this recent event with Constantine, I find myself contemplating deeply about his actions. It seems as though he was overwhelmed by it all. Perhaps his own fears and insecurities took control, leading him to disappoint the person who he has always stood by unwaveringly. By the end of Episode 4, it’s clear that he’s going to take some time off to reflect and find his bearings again.

Initially, Kieran was a defiant figure, firm in his beliefs and ready to act. However, when things started going awry, he began to question his actions. As Mason put it, “Kieran enters the situation with unwavering convictions, but when everything falls apart, he starts to feel trapped, like the walls are closing in on him. I think he’s becoming increasingly anxious.
