Who is The Butcher and does he get caught in the end?

Initially, when previews for the movie “Trap” emerged, numerous internet users speculated that the suspected serial killer, “The Butcher,” might not be Josh Hartnett’s character, Cooper, despite the trailers strongly hinting at it. They anticipated a classic M. Night Shyamalan twist, where another character would eventually be unmasked as the murderer in the film.

As a gamer diving into this thrilling narrative, some folks speculated that Cooper might just be a cover for his murderous daughter, Riley (Ariel Donoghue), the infamous serial killer known as The Butcher. But let me clarify, that’s not the truth. In this chilling tale, it’s not about discovering The Butcher’s identity, but rather, it’s an exhilarating journey following the police as they corner Cooper, with him having to think on his feet to evade capture during a concert.

Almost undetected, Cooper manages to make a daring escape. He discovers that one of the few unguarded exits is located in the backstage area, which Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan) will exit after her concert performance. Thus, Cooper devises a plan to get Riley on stage during a special performance and then into the backstage area to meet the singer, thereby facilitating his escape.

Regrettably for him, escaping the situation requires compliance with police regulations. However, only those within Lady Raven’s entourage and limo are exempt from this rule, leaving Cooper no choice but to essentially hold Lady Raven captive and coerce her into allowing both himself and Riley into the limo without interference, in order to exit unchallenged.

Once the musical segment in the movie concludes, the narrative significantly shifts towards the tense dynamic between Cooper and Lady Raven, as she attempts to expose him while he evades her and seeks the police’s recognition of his true identity. Interestingly, it is Cooper’s own wife, Rachel (Alison Pill), who ultimately plays a pivotal role in his downfall. It transpires that she had harbored suspicions about her husband prior to the film’s commencement, and her actions lead to his undoing: she discovered one of his hideouts and left behind a fragment of the concert ticket receipt, which ultimately led the police to set the “trap” that eventually ensnares Cooper.

In the end, Cooper is handcuffed by the police, but they allow him a brief moment to straighten Riley’s bicycle and bid her farewell with a warm embrace. The movie concludes with a closing scene showing Cooper in the back of the van, subtly extracting a wire bead from Riley’s tire and using it to attempt to pick the lock on his handcuffs, hinting that he may manage to break free from police custody.

Trap post-credits scene

The movie’s end sequence, Trap, includes an additional scene that appears quite promptly following the credits roll-out, nearly immediately. Here, we catch up with Jamie (Jonathan Langdon), the merchant who assisted Cooper in obtaining a concert shirt for Riley earlier.

Stunned, Jamie reacts humorously when he discovers The Butcher, a man he interacted with amicably at a concert, is actually the friendly dad from his workplace. He vows never to engage in conversation with any of his coworkers ever again.
