Transformers timeline: How to watch Transformers movies in order

Well, as a lifelong fan of these metal-morphing robots from my childhood, I must say that this cinematic journey has been quite a rollercoaster! From the early days of Sam Witwicky (bless his soul) and his AllSpark shard, to the latest installment featuring King Arthur himself, it’s safe to say that these films have certainly covered a lot of ground… or should I say, space?

In movie theaters now, “Transformers One” continues the series by delving deep into the past once again.

While it may appear straightforward to view all the Transformers movies sequentially, there’s a bit more to it than meets the eye. Initially, the first five films followed a chronological sequence, but the narrative was shuffled when Bumblebee was introduced into the mix.

If watching Transformers One leaves you eager for more, here’s a comprehensive guide on how to view the entire Transformers movie collection, arranged by their release date and storyline sequence.

A simple and straightforward method to enjoy the eight Transformers movies that have been released so far is by watching them in the original order they premiered in theaters.

Alright, gaming buddy! If you’re all set to dive back into the Transformers universe, let me guide you through the movies in the order they were unleashed:

Here are the years and titles of the Transformers movies in a more conversational format:

To put it simply, the Transformers movies haven’t been particularly strict about sticking to their original storyline. Instead, they often create new versions of their timeline to accommodate fresh plots.

If you prefer viewing the series in sequence, your journey should begin with “Transformers One” at the cinema, followed by the two prequels to Michael Bay’s initial film, which need to be watched in their respective order afterwards.

Easy.

Here’s the Transformers movies in chronological order:

Transformers One

In a chronological viewing order, Transformers One now supersedes Bumblebee as the initial film.

The animated film takes place 300 million years prior to Michael Bay’s initial Transformers movie. It narrates the tale of how the companions Orion Pax, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, and D-16, played by Brian Tyree Henry, transformed into bitter rivals Optimus Prime and Megatron.

If the movie performs well financially, there’s a possibility it could kick off a trilogy and potentially connect with the existing films. However, we’ll have to see if this plan comes to fruition.

Bumblebee

Initially, “Bumblebee” was the earliest film, taking place 20 years prior to the original, during the year 1987. However, this is no longer the sequence of events.

The origin of Bumblebee unfolds amidst the Cybertronian Civil War; as a desperate measure for survival, Optimus Prime dispatches Autobot scout B-127 to Earth, establishing a refuge where they can reorganize. On this planet, the scout develops a bond with a young woman named Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), who affectionately christens him Bumblebee.

In our previous discussion upon the release of “Bumblebee”, one of the most significant inconsistencies arises from the inclusion of Sector 7. Later, they collaborate with the Decepticons who manage to persuade them that Bumblebee is a ‘dangerous outlaw’ they should pursue.

Sector 7 seems unfamiliar with Decepticons, granting them entry to their satellite systems. The team in Sector 7 is thrilled at the potential knowledge they might gain from these mysterious intruders.

It’s difficult to imagine that Sector 7, as depicted in the initial Transformers movie, wasn’t aware of Decepticons given their long-standing use of Decepticon technology throughout the 20th century. This is because they had been studying and reverse-engineering modern devices from Megatron’s frozen body, a discovery made in the Arctic. Hence, it seems unlikely that they wouldn’t recognize a Decepticon.

In the movie “Transformers,” the Autobots don’t initially assemble on Earth at the end of “Bumblebee.” Instead, they arrive on Earth following a distress signal sent by stranded Bumblebee in the film itself. The exact timing remains uncertain; we can only guess.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Rise of the Beasts” is not only a continuation of the story told in “Bumblebee,” although Charlie won’t be reappearing, but it also serves as a prequel to the original movie based on what we currently know.

The film takes place in 1994 and presents two fresh human figures, Noah (Anthony Ramos) and Elena (Dominique Fishback). They join forces with the Autobots and Maximals to prevent Scourge from transporting the world-devouring Unicron to Earth.

At the movie’s conclusion, the Autobots remain stranded on Earth. A strong indication that we’ve entered a different timeline is found in “The Last Knight,” as it suggests that Unicron is buried within our planet, not in another universe as depicted in “Rise of the Beasts.

In the upcoming trilogy titled “Rise of the Beasts“, it’s possible that the events portrayed in the following two films will align with those from Michael Bay’s series, but this is yet to be determined for sure.

It seems like the initial Transformers film established the primary storyline, but Bumblebee has caused a slight deviation in it.

It’s important to note that each film in the series significantly altered the timeline of when the Autobots arrived on Earth, even incorporating them into the legends surrounding King Arthur.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

The movie “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” introduces a mythology that dates back to 17,000 BCE, but since the films as a whole lack coherence, this ancient history doesn’t really matter much.

2 years following the occurrences in the last film, we find ourselves back with Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), who acquires a fragment of an object known as the AllSpark. This piece triggers vivid dreams within him.

It appears he’s being tormented by the Decepticons, acting under the command of an old Decepticon called The Fallen. This ancient being aims to take revenge on Earth by locating and activating a device that would serve as an energon source for the Decepticons. Once activated, this machine would cause the sun’s destruction and the extinction of all life on Earth.

In this final “Transformers” film, Megan Fox played her role as the character who later got replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in subsequent movies, serving as Sam’s romantic interest.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

In “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” the epic struggle between the Autobots and Decepticons reaches its climax, with both sides vying for advanced technology from their celestial homeland, which mysteriously collided with the Moon. In a twist, our heroic Autobots emerge victorious!

You’d think this would be the end of the series, but no…

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Watch now: Prime Video | iTunes | Microsoft Store

In the opening scenes of Transformers: Age of Extinction, we travel back 65 million years into the past, where an extraterrestrial race, referred to as the Creators, deploy mysterious artifacts known as Seeds, which blanket the Earth with a material called Transformium. This event leads to the extinction of dinosaurs.

Currently, geologist Darcy Tyril (played by Sophia Myles) is digging into the Transformium on behalf of KSI Industries. They employ this resource to manufacture Transformer drones.

In contrast to the past movies, while certain Transformers make a reappearance here, the human characters are all fresh, boasting the addition of Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, and several other new faces.

Transformers: The Last Knight

Watch now: Prime Video | iTunes | Microsoft Store

In “Transformers: The Last Knight,” we delve into the legend of King Arthur, with a character believed to be a relative of Merlin, portrayed by Laura Haddock as Viviane Wembly, and, of course, the legendary King Arthur himself.

In the last flick, I found myself saying goodbye to Earth as the Autobots set off, with a mission to rebuild their home planet, Cybertron. The movie ended on a cliffhanger, leaving us guessing about what adventures might come next. It’s a bummer not knowing if we’ll ever get more updates!

Transformers One is out now in US cinemas and is released in UK cinemas on October 11.
