Trailer review: 5 thoughts after watching the American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez trailer

As a gamer who grew up in Boston and followed sports religiously, I can’t help but be intrigued by this latest offering from Ryan Murphy – “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez“. Having watched “The Patriot Way” documentary on Netflix about the New England Patriots, I’m well-versed in the team’s history and Hernandez’s rise to fame.

The debut trailer for FX’s “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” has arrived, promising a captivating new drama!

Ryan Murphy is widely recognized for his exceptional talent in producing popular anthology series on FX. Among these are “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story,” which have received numerous accolades, including Emmy Awards, due to their successful seasons. Now, Murphy is venturing into the sports sphere, with his initial project being the case of Aaron Hernandez.

As a standout player for the University of Florida Gators, Hernandez contributed to their 2009 National Championship win. Subsequently, he was selected by the New England Patriots in the 2010 NFL draft and even participated in a Super Bowl.

Back then, I was a die-hard fan, cheering for Aaron Hernandez on the field. But things took a drastic turn in 2013 when he was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro player who was dating the sister of his fiancée. The trial concluded in 2015 with a life sentence. He was also indicted for the 2012 murders of two other men, though he was acquitted for that case. Tragically, Aaron’s story ended prematurely in 2017 when he was found dead by suicide at the age of 27, within the confines of his prison cell.

As a sports enthusiast who has closely followed the Aaron Hernandez case and its impact on American football, I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming FX drama based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.” The ten-episode series promises to delve deep into this wild story, shedding light on the complexities of the sport and its institutions. Having closely followed the case in the news and read extensive articles about it, I believe that this drama will provide a captivating exploration of Hernandez’s life, the football world, and the intricate web of connections between them. The first trailer has already piqued my interest with its intriguing twists, and I can’t wait to see how the series unfolds.

It’s going to be a dark ride

Just as anticipated, the series won’t shy away from exploring Hernandez’s troubled side. In the trailer, he can be heard saying, “You have no idea what thoughts I harbor. It’s like a demon within me. What if God designed me this way?” This suggests that the factors leading to Hernandez’s violent acts were inherent to him, and football served as his primary means of channeling his anger.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but be intrigued by the trailer, which subtly suggests Hernandez’s struggles with an agent cautioning him about the detrimental impact of drugs and other troubles on his giftedness. The series promises to delve deeply into these complexities, offering a gripping narrative that won’t flinch from the darker aspects of its subject matter.

Jose Andres Rivera looks the part

As a devoted admirer, I can confidently say that Jose Andre Rivera is poised to shine with his upcoming role in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” He embodies both the physical likeness of Hernandez and convincingly portrays a football player. What truly sets Rivera apart, however, is his acting talent, which will allow him to delve deep into the complexities of Hernandez’s life, making his character sympathetic despite his tragic downfall. Just like the real Hernandez, Rivera promises to give an all-out performance that leaves no stone unturned.

The football may be secondary

In this narrative, although it’s labeled as a sports story, the sporty aspects might take a backseat. We find Patrick Schwarzenegger portraying Tim Tebow and Norbert Leo Butz as Bill Belichick from the Patriots. However, the football aspect may not hold as much significance compared to the central focus – that of Hernandez. This tale could be about any individual, say an actor or businessman, rising from poverty to wealth, only to struggle with success. The trailer hints at football playing a pivotal role in Hernandez’s career, but the emphasis is more on the man himself, his life, and his legal issues, rather than the gridiron drama.

The crimes will be a focus

Clearly, the heart of the show lies in exploring Hernandez’s heinous crimes, which are suggested in the trailer through depictions of his killing spree of multiple victims. The series aims to unravel what led Hernandez down this dark path, and it’s interesting that despite the obviousness of his guilt to the police, there remains a curiosity about what drove him to commit these crimes and why. Additionally, the show will delve into the responses of friends and teammates as they grapple with the realization that they knew a murderer. The murders themselves will serve as the focal point of the series, promising another captivating addition to Murphy’s body of work.

It’s a perfect Ryan Murphy show

You can always tell a Ryan Murphy show by the unique style. From the frantic cuts to the overall theme and tone, this fits right with his other works. That includes a top cast aiding the storyline and no doubt a few shots at the media blitz about the Hernandez trial. There’s also hints at Hernandez’s final days in jail and the fallout of his actions as the finale may be more about the aftermath of it all.

The elements coalesce to create a compelling new drama, as viewers will find “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” another impressive addition to Murphy’s collection at FX.

American Horror Story: Aaron Hernandez premieres on Sept. 17 at 10/9c only on FX.
