Trail-Blazing ABC Boss Dies at 90: A Tribute to Geoffrey Whitehead

90-year-old former director of ABC, Geoffrey Whitehead, passed away in New Zealand on Christmas Eve. The news of his death has only recently been disclosed to the public.

No cause of death has been released and it is believed he was in poor health for some time.

In 1934, Whitehead was born, and he served as the inaugural Managing Director for the national broadcaster from 1983 until 1986.

During a time when the Australian media scene was undergoing major transformations, he made a crucial difference in redefining ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

Spanning four decades, his remarkable career in media reached across Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

He left a lasting legacy of advocacy for public broadcasting and democratic principles. 

During Whitehead’s tenure, there were substantial changes focusing on updating the ABC’s internal processes and expanding its impact within Australian society.

At a crucial juncture, his guidance was instrumental, as he addressed the task of clarifying the broadcaster’s function within a transforming media environment.

He advocated for changes that targeted enhancing transparency, accountability, and responsiveness within the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), ensuring it catered effectively to both the general public and its employees.

Before joining ABC, Whitehead served as the Director-General of Radio New Zealand, a role during which he contributed significantly to the formation of the recently restructured national broadcasting entity.

He began his long career in England in the early ’50s.

This led to his shock resignation from the position in 1986 after four years in the role.

In his 1988 book, Inside the ABC, he looked back on his time there and continued to take pride in the foundational work he had modernized for the broadcasting company.

Even in his later years, Whitehead remained a staunch advocate for public broadcasting. 

2022 marked the ABC’s 90th anniversary, and in this milestone year, he advocated for cross-party endorsement to cement the national broadcaster’s function as a pillar of Australia’s democratic structure.

ABC Chair Kim Williams paid tribute to Whitehead in a statement. 

In his role as the inaugural Managing Director of the freshly established Australian Broadcasting Corporation, he was resolute on breaking free from its traditional outlook, according to Williams.

I’m happy to announce that the ABC has become significantly more welcoming and receptive to change and innovation compared to its initial stages.

Whitehead is survived by his long-time partner Faith Barber.
