Tragic final days of Bewitched star who went from fame and fortune to cleaning toilets
As an ardent fan of Bewitched, I find Dick York’s life story incredibly heart-wrenching yet inspiring. The man who brought Darrin Stephens to life was a victim of circumstances beyond his control, and it’s unfortunate that he had to suffer so much in his final years.
In simpler terms, the actor Dick York, famous for his role in Bewitched, found himself cleaning toilets during his later years as a means of making ends meet. His downfall was triggered by an addiction to painkillers stemming from an earlier work-related injury.
In the popular sitcom that ran between 1964 and 1969, Dick York was famously cast as the human husband Darrin Stephens alongside Elizabeth Montgomery’s portrayal of the witch Samantha with a twitching nose.
Nevertheless, his difficulties traced back to well before the premiere of Bewitched, as he encountered problems during the filming of the Western movie They Came to Cordura in 1959, according to the Los Angeles Times.
During filming, York found himself involved in a scene where he and other cast members were tasked with lifting a railroad handcart. However, when the director called out “cut”, everyone else released their grip, leaving only York to hold onto it. Unfortunately, the car jerked suddenly, causing strain on his back and the muscles surrounding it.
By the time he started filming Bewitched, he had grown reliant on painkillers and various other medications as a means of managing his discomfort.
During the shooting of an episode on the show in February 1969, as reported by People, York suffered a collapse when being lifted onto a platform.
During the fall, York experienced a seizure due to epilepsy, forcing him to exit the production. Later on, Dick Sargent assumed the character of Darrin and remained in that role until the show ended in 1972.
Approaching its 60th anniversary, the popular TV show has been a challenging time for York in his later years, as stated by Herbie J. Pilato, author of “Twitch Upon A Star,” to Fox News Digital.
Indeed, Dick York found himself in a dire state, both financially and physically. Essentially, he no longer possessed the means to sustain his lifestyle. His professional life had come to a standstill, leaving him with no further opportunities in acting. In addition, his health was deteriorating rapidly. It was indeed heartbreaking to witness his struggles, as stated by Pilato.
‘He became a cleaning man. He went from being a star of one of the biggest TV shows in the history of television to cleaning toilets.
‘It was humbling for him, and he never complained about it, but… it should not have happened.’
Erin Murphy, aged 60, who portrayed the magical daughter Tabitha of characters Darrian and Samantha on TV, shared with People magazine in October that York was her most cherished television father figure.
‘I will give you a scoop. My entire life I have been so diplomatic because I loved them both. They were wonderful guys. Watching the show, Dick York is a better Darrin,’ she said.
Dick York played the role of a father, having many children, which made him even more fatherly in nature. In other words, he acted like a dad. On the other hand, Dick Sargent was an excellent individual and we maintained contact until his death. However, when it comes to this particular instance, I’m leaning towards Dick York.
Pilato said York was devastated and riddled with guilt over having to leave the show.
“He didn’t fully heal from the hurt. He was absent for 14 shows. It just wasn’t ‘Bewitched’ as we knew it without Darren, without the central struggle of, ‘Honey, please don’t use your magic,'” stated Pilato. (Aiming to make the sentence more conversational and easy to understand)
They found themselves compelled to make a change – it wasn’t optional. He couldn’t help but feel terrible about it. He deeply regretted potentially jeopardizing the project for everyone involved in the series.
He disliked the idea of them losing their jobs and the show coming to an end. Rather than standing firm, he chose to resign instead. However, he mentioned to me that if he had that summer of 1969 for recovery, he believed he could have completed the show.
York died in 1992 at age 63 from complications due to emphysema.
