Tragedy Strikes on His Birthday: Beloved Wife of Sir Mark Rylance Dies

Sir Mark Rylance‘s wife Claire Van Kampen has died aged 71 on her husband’s 65th birthday.

It was announced that Van Kampen died, surrounded by her loved ones, following a cancer diagnosis, according to a message released on behalf of Sir Mark and their daughter, Juliet.

For approximately two decades, Van Kampen served as a multifaceted professional, excelling as a concert pianist, composer, playwright, and theater director, with a significant portion of his career spent at Shakespeare’s Globe.

The statement mentions that she is often referred to as “among the funniest and most inspiring women we’ve ever encountered.

It added: ‘We thank her for imbuing our lives with her magic, music, laughter, and love.

* Ring the bell and blow the trumpets, let’s celebrate, a significant event has occurred, a new chapter is starting. One of our respected wise individuals has departed.

Among her theater accomplishments is creating the music for the 1989 Royal Shakespeare Company’s Hamlet, where Sir Mark performed; it was in this very year that they got married.

In the later stages of her profession, she composed unique soundtracks for Broadway performances such as True West (from the 2000s), Boeing-Boeing (2008), and La Bete (2010 comedy). Additionally, she adapted scores for Twelfth Night and Richard III, both works by Shakespeare.

As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I had the privilege of following Van Kampen’s work, particularly his masterpiece, “Farinelli And The King.” In this captivating production, the esteemed Sir Mark brought King Philippe V of Spain to life, earning numerous nominations, such as for best new play at the Olivier Awards and several Tony Awards.

In London’s Royal College of Music, both the director and the composer honed their skills, focusing particularly on the art of performing 20th-century music while mastering music theory and piano techniques.

she continued her professional journey, excelling both as a songwriter and a musician, crafting and performing music for stage plays, radio broadcasts, TV shows, movie scores, and symphony concerts.

1986 marked the start of her professional journey on the stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The following year, she joined forces with the Royal National Theatre as well.

From 1996 to 2006, she held the position of Artistic Associate at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater during the time when Sir Mark served as its artistic director.

Later on, Van Kampen served as the musical advisor and in-house composer for Dominic Dromgoole, who took over as the artistic director, from the years 2007 to 2015.

She was also a creative associate of the prestigious Old Vic theatre in London.

Once upon a time, I, enamored by architecture and design, walked down the aisle with my beloved, Chris, an architect of renowned talent. Together, we crafted a beautiful family, welcoming our two cherished daughters, Juliet and Natasha, into our lives.

In the year 2012, at the tender age of 28, Natasha, a talented filmmaker and her youngest child, passed away following a tragic instance of brain hemorrhage.
