In a recent interview with Empire, the director discussed the concerns fans have voiced since Toy Story 5 was announced. The previous film, Toy Story 4, received some criticism because many felt Toy Story 3 provided a satisfying conclusion to the story. Despite this, fans still turned out in large numbers for Toy Story 4, making it the most successful film in the Toy Story series so far.

According to Stanton, while Toy Story 3 felt like a natural conclusion to the initial story arc, it was always intended as a trilogy, leaving the door open for future adventures. Because the toys can be passed down through families, there’s no limit to where the series could go. Stanton, a two-time Academy Award winner who also directed Finding Nemo and WALL-E, believes the world of Toy Story is expansive enough to support endless new stories, and that’s the goal with Toy Story 5.

With the third film, the story of Andy came to a natural conclusion. Fans who want a complete trilogy can have that, and they’re not required to watch any further if they don’t wish to.
