Director Andrew Stanton has explained why Pixar is making a fifth Toy Story movie. In an interview with Empire magazine, the director of Finding Nemo (2003) and WALL-E said the new film, scheduled to come out on June 19, 2026, continues the story after the conclusion of Andy’s storyline in Toy Story 3. He noted, “Toy Story 3 was the end… of the Andy years.”
Look, nobody’s taking away the original trilogy anyone enjoys – they can absolutely keep loving it and stop there if they want! But what I really love about this universe is that it evolves. It’s not about freezing things in time, and I think that’s a really cool thing about it. Things change, and that’s okay!
Director Andrew Stanton shared that the new film looks at how technology is changing childhood. He explained it’s less about a traditional fight and more about a bigger issue: kids just aren’t playing with toys the way they used to.

Technology has profoundly impacted how we all live, and we need to consider what that means for ourselves and our children. Simply blaming technology for problems isn’t a helpful solution.
I was so excited when the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 dropped this month! Disney also gave us a little hint of what it’s about, and it sounds really interesting. Basically, Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and all our favorite toys are facing a new challenge – kids these days are way more into electronics, and that’s going to shake things up for them!

In the new movie, Woody and Buzz Lightyear will face off against a new villain named Lily Pad, a digital tablet character voiced by Greta Lee. Comedian Conan O’Brien will also be featured as Smarty Pants, a high-tech potty-training device.
Although not much is known about Toy Story 5, Tim Allen recently shared a few hints with WIVB. He revealed that the story will heavily feature the character Jessie, and that Woody (Tom Hanks) and he will reconnect. Allen also teased an amazing opening scene involving Buzz Lightyear, but didn’t offer any further details.

Stanton and Kenna Harris, who co-directed the project, shared that it was a funny and touching experience figuring out how classic toys would react to modern technology, and they’re excited to finally show audiences a sneak peek.
It’s been wonderful watching Greta Lee play Lilypad. She perfectly captures the character’s mix of playful teasing, humor, and genuine warmth.
Toy Story 5 is slated for release on 19 June, 2026.
